WILLIAM C. CODMAN, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLANI), ASSIGNOR TO GORHAM MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR A HANDLE FOR SPOON S, FORKS, 0R SIMILAR ARTICLES.
gn No. 34,435, dated April 30, 1901.
No. 54.541. Term of patent 14 years.
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. CODMAN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented and produced a new and originalDesign for the I-Iandle of a Spoon, Fork, or Simi` cation, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof.
Figure l is a plan view of the front of my newly-designed handle, showing the same connected with the bowl of a spoon, the tines of a fork being indicated in broken lines. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the rearof the handle, showing the rear ornamentation extending partly over the bowl of a spoon.
As shown in the drawings, the leading or material feature of my design consists of the foliated bulbous enlargement o., from the end of which the foliatons extend over the article to which the handle is attached. The stern b extends from the foliation of the bulb, gradually broadens, and curves inward to form the contracted neck c, which divides the stem from the escutcheon d, which forms the blade of the handle. The stem is ornamented by raised beads extending along the margins and terminating below the neck into inwardlyturned foliated scrolls. The space between the marginal beads on the stem is ornamented on the front by a panel ornament extending from the bulb a and terminating in a conventional vase ornament. On the rear of the stem a pendent ornament extends from scrolls, ornamenting the contracted neck downward part of the length of the central convex panel. The escutcheon d has the conventional outline of a shield, gradually increasing in width toward the upper end and curving suddenly inward toward the central segmental pediment. On the front of the handle the margins of the shield are formed of a broad border, having at the junction with the neck c two conventional dolphin ornamentations, the heads of which extend toward the center, and at the upper end of the escutcheon the conventional representation of a Greek mask in the center, from which foliated scrolls extend in opposite directions and along the two sides. On the rear ofthe handle the representation of a basket of fruit supported on foliations ornaments the center and extends over the pediment. The marginal border inclosing a convex shield-like panel is ornamented with foliated scrolls extending from the neck and from the scrolls on each side of the upper central ornament. The Greek mask and the dolphin-ornamented border, in connection with the shield-like outline of the blade of the handle, present to the eye a classic appearance, which is sustained by the ornamentations of the stem.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The design for the handle of a spoon, fork or similar article, as herein shown and described. Y
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
