SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 18,194, dated March 20, 1888.
Application filed October 11, i887. Serial To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. MURPHY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and original Design for a Badge. of which the following is a full, clear,
and exact specification.
My invention relates to a new design for a badge; and the leading feature of my design consistsin the representation ofa firemanshat.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which the figure of the drawing is a per spective view of my newlydesigned badge.
[n carrying out the design the body consists of a substantial oval figure, A, the sides of which are provided with a regular inward curl or curve, A. From thelower or reduced end of said figure, which represents the cape of a bar, double linesB are projected outward to a central point,\\'hich lines, at their base or inner ends, are connected by a curve-line, B, imparting the efi'ect of a ribbed conical ofiset, B. solid with the body and representing the crown of a hat. From the lower side of the conical figure B, near the outer end, a waveliue, b, is projectedm'hiehline b intersects with an inwardlyd nclined line, b, terminating inthe oval figlllGA. The lines b and b', in connection with the conical figure B, constitute a figure, C, and representla l'rontispiece.
Upon thesurfaiceot the oval figure A, at the upper or enlarged end, a group of figures, d, d, d, and d, are crossed one upon the other, representing, respectively, the ladder, book, 3 5 pick, and trumpet usually employed by firemen.

Upon a rectangular figure, D, having a ribhon-like surface and extending above the en- 0 larged or upper end of the figure A. the representation of the American spread-eagle is produced, as shown at D, and a circular figure, E, representing a ring, is arranged to have the appearance of interlocking the eagle figure and aforesaid figure A.
In the complete design the image of an eagle appears as secured upon a variegated ribbon holding in suspension a firemaus hat.
I claim- The design for a badge herein shown and described, the same consisting of the oval fig ure A, having upwardly-curved side lines, A, the conical figure B. formed of converging double linesB, the figure 0, formed of the lines b and b, the crossed figures d, d, d, and d, produced upon the figure A, respectively representing a ladder, hook, pick, and trumpet, the rectangular figure D, representing a rib hen, the figure D, produced upon the ribbonlike surface, representing an eagle, and a circular fignzre, E, interlocking the figures A and D, whereby an eagle is represented upon: a ribbon background supporting a firemans hat, asset forth.
