DIAMOND-SETTING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,870, dated February 18, 1896. Application filed. December 21, 1895. Serial No. 572,850. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN G. HEPPDING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City Heights, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Diamond Settings, of which the following is a specification.

This invention refers to a diamond-setting of that class which is known as a high-base setting and in which an interior layer of platinumis used in connection with an exterior layer of gold, said layers being so combined that no platinum is visible from the under side of the setting when the same is applied for use; and the invention consists of a diamond-setting which is composed of an interior layer of platinum and an exterior layer of gold, said platinum filling having a solid ring of gold at its lower edge over which the exterior layer of gold extends, as will be fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claim.

' In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1, 1, 2, and 2 are respectively top and edge views of the blanks of platinum and gold as employed in the setting heretofore in use. Figs. 3 and 3 are respectively a top view and a vertical section on line 3 3, Fig. 3, of the platinum and gold layers soldered together. Fig. 4 is a vertical central section of a diamondsetting as made heretofore, and in which the interior layer of platinum showsat the under side of the setting. Figs. 5, 5, 6, 6, 7, and 7 are top views and side views of the blanks of platinum and gold and of the gold filling-ring used for the platinum blank in my improved construction of diamond-setting. Figs. 8 and 8 are respectively a top View of the platinum blank with its gold filling-ring and a section of the same on line 8 8, Fig. 8; and Fig. 9 is a vertical central section of a so-called high-base diamondsetting made according to my improved construction, in which no platinum is visible at the under side of the setting.

Referring to the drawings,a b are the blanks making diamond-settings of that class which were soldered together and then shaped in dies so as to form the setting. In high-base settings a ring of platinum appeared at the under side or base, which ring after some time commenced to tarnish so as to mar the appearance of the setting. To avoid this objection the platinum blank a of my improved diam ond-setting is provided with a large central opening a, into which a filling-ring cl of gold is inserted. The platinum blank a is then soldered onto the thinner gold blank 6, as shown in Figs 8 and 8, and the blank then subjected to the action of the dies so as to impart the required shape thereto. By the action of the dies the filling-ring d of gold is crowded to the lower part or base of the setting, and no platinum appears at the under side of the setting, but the entire lower portion of the setting is formed of solid gold, so that whatever ornamentation is worked into the lower part or base of the setting the surface will always be in gold, as no platinum can appear, whereby the objection as to the tarnishing of the platinum and the consequent marring of the appearance of the setting is avoided.

My improved setting unites all the advantages of a setting with an interior platinum layer or of an ordinary gold setting, as the platinum is entirely covered at the base of the setting, and thereby a much better appearance is imparted to the same.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A diamond-setting, consisting of an interior layer of platinum provided with an inner filling-ring of gold at its lower part or base, and an exterior layer of gold extending over the platinum layer and filling-ring so that the platinum layer is entirely covered with gold at its outside and base, substantially as set forth.
