MAST-HOIOP.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 527,167, dated October 9, 1894;

Application filed May 9 1894. Serial No. 510,651. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be .it known that I, WILLIAM R. BAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Watertown, in the county of Jefferson and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mast- Hoops; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact'dcscription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the same.

My invention belongs-to a class of devices of a nautical character, known as sail or mast hoops, and it has for its object to prevent liability of the bindingof the same on the mast as the sail is raised and lowered, permitting the sliding thereof freely up and down on the mast, also lessening frictional contact and undue wear between the parts, and .to these ends the invention consists of such a hoop adapted to have two rear, diverging bearingsurfaces upon the mast, and of its detailed construction, substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed and specifically pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a side view of my invention, as applied for use. Figure 2 is a perspective view, and Fig. 3 is a section thereof.

In the embodiment of my invention, I produce the hoop A of a single or continuous piece of metal or wire, it being curved into two circles or coils a a, diverging from a single central point at the front, toward, and havingtheir maximum divergence at,th'e rear,

thus providing two bearing-surfaces thereat,

to prevent, as well understood, the liability of the binding of the hoop upon the mast as heretofore experienced, also lessening friction and undue wear between the parts -the loops and mast-and permitting the hoops to slide freely up and down upon the mast as the sail'is raised and lowered.

The ends of the single or continuous wire of the hoop are suitably and firmly secured or clasped together and upon the central or intermediate body portion thereof bya clasp or sleeve 12 soldered or brazed thereto as shown, or otherwise, while the rear, divergent portion of the coils or circles a arebraced or stayed preferably by a clasp or plate owhose upper and lower edges are turned over, and soldered or brazed to, said coils or circles, or otherwise secured thereon.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. As a new article of manufacturea mast hoop having two rear isolated or diverging bearing surfaces or points upon the mast, substantially as set forth.

2. Asa new article of manufacture, a mast or sail hoop consisting of asingle or continuous piece coiled or curved toward the rear into two diverging circles or coils from a single point at the front, with the ends thereof clasped or secured upon the intermediate body portion, substantially as set forth.
