0. W. PIERCE. COFFEE 0B. TEA'POT HANDLE.
Patented Oct. 9, 1894.
arm/e5 Whieraa UNITED STATES PAT NT OFFIC o'RMEL W. PIERCE, .OF o'LEAN, N W YORK.
COFFEE OR -TE A' For HANDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 527,182, dated October 9, 1894.
Application filedFebrnary 10, 1894. "serial No. 499,784. (No model.)
To all whom it may coficern: .1
Be it known that I, ORMEL W. PIERCE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Olean, in the county of Cattaraugus and State of New York,- have invented 'a new and useful Cofiee or Tea Pot Hand-1e, of which the following is a specification. I I v My invention relates toan improvement in handles for coffee and tea pots; and the object of the invention is to so construct these devices that a more durable andsimple arr rangement will be produced and one which can be manufacturedat a much smaller cost than ordinarily.
To these ends my invention consists of an improved arrangement of'sheet metal strips, whereby a wooden handle may-be strongly fastened in place, and in certain improved features of construction, all of which will be 'fully described hereinafter and finally embodied in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a cofiee or tea-pot having my improvements applied. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the handle. Fig. 3 is a section on line 0cac of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the attaching device standing alone. Figs. 5 and 6 are similar views of the two sections comprising my attaching device.
The reference letter a indicates the coffeepot to which my improvements are shown applied, and b the handle.
c and 0' indicate the attaching devices and they are each formed of the two sections (1 and; e of,sheet.metal: Section d consists of a main portion (2' having one end enlarged and provided with the transverse extension 01 The main portion (1 is formed with the flanges or ribs j", which extend from the extension (1 to the opposite end of the section, where they merge into the arms f. Armsf' are formed integral with the main portion (1 and are each of a length sufficient to extend around one half of the handle 0, their ends being bent inwardly to form studs g. These arms, f, are adapted to fit in the annular groove g formed in the handle 0, and to have the studs g project into the handle. If so desired the e ends of the armsf' may be joined by solder, as shown at g ,bu't this is'not absolutely necessary. p
The section eis shown indetail by Fig. 6, and consists of a sheet metal plate formed in the same shape as the main portion'd' of the section cl, and is adapted to be secured by f as shown in the first four figures; extension d liscurvedlaterally, so that it will fit snugly against the side ofthe coffeepot, and the parts may. be secured by rivets orother'wise as shown at h, Fig. 1.
By this construction itwill be seen that the handle may be manufactured at the lowest possible cost, and that when completed it is of a most effective character. The peculiar solder or otherwise to the edges of the flanges The construction and arrangement of the sections d and e'make the device as strong as could be desired, and when finished,it presents aneat and attractive appearance.
Having thusdescriloed my invention. what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi 1. A device for attaching handles to cofieepots, consisting of two sections of sheet metal, one of which is provided with a lug for attaching to the vessel and with two arms adapted to encircle the handle, and the remaining sectionbeing secured to the first at the part between the arms and lug, substantially as described.
2. A device for attaching handles to coffee and tea-pots, consisting of two sections of sheet metal, one of which is provided with longitudinal flanges, a lug for attaching to the vessel and two arms adapted to encircle the handle and having studs on their ends which areal-ranged to enter the handle thus securing it, and the remainingsecti'on being secured to the longitudinal flanges of the first, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses. V
, ORMEL W. PIERCE.
