Description
本発明は、かかる事情に鑑みてなされたものであり、その目的は、電池内部の温度上昇が抑えられ、過充電耐性に優れた二次電池を提供することにある。
ポリエチレン樹脂は、その融点が、概ね130℃以下、典型的には120℃以下、好ましくは110℃以下、例えば100℃以下であるとよい。これにより、二次電池100の内部の温度が大きく上昇する前に、シャットダウン機能を作用させることができる。その結果、温度上昇を抑制することができる。
なお、樹脂の融点は、一般的な示差走査熱量測定(Differential scanning calorimetry:DSC)によって測定することができる。
なお、セパレータ30の各層の厚みは、例えば電子顕微鏡(例えば、走査型電子顕微鏡(Scanning Electron Microscope:SEM))観察によって実測することができる。例えば、セパレータ30の各層において、複数箇所で厚みを測定し、その平均値を採用することができる。
本試験例では、多孔質ポリエチレン層の空孔率と過充電耐性との関係性について検討を行った。具体的には、まず、セパレータとして、多孔質ポリエチレン層(以下PE層という。)と、多孔質ポリプロピレン層(以下、PP層という。)との2層で構成され、PE層の空孔率のみが異なる5種類のセパレータシート(例1〜5)を用意した。なお、セパレータを構成する各層の性状は下記の通りである。
・PE層:ポリエチレン系樹脂(融点:110℃)を含み、厚みが1μmであり、空孔率が2〜20%のもの。
・PP層:ポリプロピレン系樹脂(融点:130℃)を含み、厚みが10μmであり、空孔率が40%のもの。
・正極:アルミ箔(正極集電体)の表面に、リチウム遷移金属複合酸化物を含む正極活物質層を備えた正極シート。
・負極:銅箔(負極集電体)の表面に、炭素材料(負極活物質)を含む負極活物質層を備えた負極シート。
・電解液:エチレンカーボネートとジメチルカーボネートとエチルメチルカーボネートとの体積比が30:40:30の混合溶媒に、LiPF6(支持塩)を溶解させたもの。
一方、PE層の空孔率が2〜5%である例1,2では、最高電池温度が110℃以下であり、例3〜5に比べて相対的に過充電時における電池内部の温度上昇が抑制されていた。これは、PE層の空孔率が小さいほど、セパレータのシャットダウンを短い時間で完了することができ、正負極間のイオン伝導を速やかに遮断することができたためと考えられる。このことから、PE層の空孔率を5%以下とすることは、過充電耐性を向上する観点から有効であるとわかった。また、PE層の空孔率が2%以上であれば、セパレータの連通性を確保できるとわかった。
本試験例では、樹脂基材の総厚みに対する多孔質ポリエチレン層(PE層)の厚みの比(厚み比)と過充電耐性との関係性について検討を行った。具体的には、表2に示す厚み比のセパレータ(例6〜11)を用いたこと以外は上記試験例Iの例2と同様に、リチウムイオン二次電池(例6〜11)を構築し、25Vまで充電する過充電試験を行った。結果を表2、図4に示す。なお、表2の「厚み比」は、樹脂基材の総厚みに対するPE層の厚みの比であり、小数点以下第4位を四捨五入して示している。
一方、PE層の厚み比が0.048〜0.091である例6,7では、最高電池温度が110℃以下であり、例8〜11に比べて相対的に過充電時における電池内部の温度上昇が抑制されていた。これは、PE層の厚み比が小さいほど、セパレータのシャットダウンを短い時間で完了することができたためと考えられる。このことから、PE層の厚み比を0.048〜0.091とすることは、過充電耐性を向上する観点から有効であるとわかった。
本試験例では、多孔質ポリエチレン層(PE層)および多孔質ポリプロピレン層(PP層)の絶対的な厚みと過充電耐性との関係性について検討を行った。具体的には、表3に示す厚みのセパレータ(例12〜15)を用いたこと以外は上記試験例Iの例2と同様に、リチウムイオン二次電池(例12〜15)を構築し、25Vまで充電する過充電試験を行った。結果を表3、図5に示す。

- 正極と、負極と、前記正極と前記負極との間に介在するセパレータと、を有する電極体と、
電解液と、
を備え、
前記セパレータは、ポリエチレン系樹脂を含み前記負極と対向するように配置されている多孔質ポリエチレン層と、前記ポリエチレン系樹脂よりも融点の高い樹脂を含む多孔質高融点樹脂層と、を有する多層構造の樹脂基材を備え、
前記多孔質ポリエチレン層の空孔率は2%以上5%以下であり、
前記多孔質高融点樹脂層の空孔率は、前記多孔質ポリエチレン層の空孔率よりも大きく、
前記樹脂基材の総厚みに対する前記多孔質ポリエチレン層の厚みの比は、0.048以上0.091以下である、二次電池。 - 前記多孔質高融点樹脂層が、多孔質ポリプロピレン層であり、
前記樹脂基材が、前記多孔質ポリエチレン層と前記多孔質ポリプロピレン層との2層構造で構成されている、請求項1に記載の二次電池。 - 前記樹脂基材の総厚みが、5.5μm以上22μm以下である、請求項1又は2に記載の二次電池。
