れ、駆動用スイッチング素子を有する複数の画素によっ
て構成された電気光学表示装置、例えば、液晶ディスプ
レーあるいはプラズマディスプレー、真空マイクロエレ
クトロニクスディスプレー等の画像表示に際して、高度
な階調表示を得るための表示方法に関する。
ィスプレー装置も、従来の陰極線管(CRT)から、プ
ラズマディスプレーや液晶ディスプレー等の薄型のディ
スプレー(フラットパネルディスプレー)に置き換えら
れてきた。また、最近では、電界放射陰極とグリッドか
らなる微小な真空管をマトリクスアレイ状に配列せし
め、このマトリクスアレイから放射される電子を蛍光体
に当てて、画像を表示するという真空マイクロエレクト
ロニクスディスプレーも研究されるようになった。これ
らのディスプレー装置はいずれも、マトリクスの交点に
かかる電圧を制御することによって、映像を表示するも
のである。

イクロエレクトロニクスディスプレーでは、カソードか
ら電界放射によって電子が放射される。

線に電圧を印加することによって、その交点に電圧を発
生させるものである。これは、単純マトリクス構造と称
される。この構造は、単純であるがゆえ、作製が容易
で、安価にディスプレーができる。しかしながら、駆動
の際に、予定していなかった部分にまで信号が流れ、画
像がぼけるというクロストークという現象がしばしば発
生した。クロストークを回避するには、光学特性が、あ
るしきい値以上の電界によって急峻に変化する材料を採
用する必要があった。例えば、プラズマ放電は、このよ
うなしきい値が明確に存在し、単純マトリクス方式には
好ましいディスプレーであった。

を伴って明るさの変化する材料を用いることができず、
中間的な明度や色調を得ることが難しかった。

ィブマトリクスディスプレーと呼ばれ、各画素に1つ以
上のスイッチング素子を有している。スイッチング素子
としては、PINダイオードやMIMダイオード、ある
いは薄膜トランジスターなどが使用される。

調表示は困難である。従来の階調表示方式を図1(A)
に示す。縦軸はある特定の画素に印加される電圧の大き
さを、横軸は時間を表している。これは、液晶ディスプ
レーの1つの画素にかかる電圧の変化を示している。電
圧が、交流パルス状にかけられているのは、直流を長時
間にわたって液晶に印加すると、液晶が電気分解をおこ
して劣化するためである。

実際には、液晶材料は、あるしきい値で急速に光学特性
が変化するのであるが、ここでは、単純に、光学特性は
電圧に対して、線型に変化するものとする。この近似
は、液晶材料でも、例えば、分散型液晶といわれる材料
ではかなりの近い近似となる。したがって、例えば、1
6階調表示を得んとすれば、電圧を16段階に制御し
て、これを画素にかける必要がある。
すると、飽和状態となり、それ以上の電圧をかけてもほ
とんど光学特性は変化しない。もし、16階調を達成し
ようとすれば、5Vを16等分した300mVの精度の
電圧を印加しなければならない。より高階調を達成せん
とすれば、より微妙な電圧を印加しなければならないこ
とは当然である。実際に、300mV以下の精度で電圧
を発生させることは容易なことではなく、また、このよ
うな微妙な電圧が、実際に画素に到達するまでに、さま
ざまな原因によって減衰してしまう。例えば、配線抵
抗、薄膜トランジスタの抵抗、薄膜トランジスタの寄生
容量による画素電位の低下、等である。そして、これら
の電圧変動のパラメータは、各画素のアクティブ素子に
よって、さまざまに違うため、実際には、大きなパネル
全体にわたって、画素電圧の変動を±0.2V程度に保
つことが精一杯である。

(B)は本質的には違いがなく、複数のパルスの順番を
入れ換えただけのものである。その詳細は、本発明人等
の発明である特願平3−209869に述べられている
のでここでは詳細は省略する。

るさを示す。このようにして、“0”(全くパルスがな
い)から“63”まで、64階調の表示がおこなえる。
幅は、電圧の繰り返しの周期τの64分の1である必要
がある。そして、実際に、薄膜トランジスタ等で、スイ
ッチングをおこなう場合には、薄膜トランジスタには、
マトリクスの行数だけ短いパルスが印加される。例え
ば、480行のマトリクスであれば、その480分の1
のパルスが薄膜トランジスタに印加される。τは、通常
30msecであるので、最小パルスの幅は、500μ
secである。したがって、薄膜トランジスタ等の駆動
信号としては1μsecが要求される。この数字は十分
に大きいように考えられるかもしれないが、薄膜トラン
ジスタにとっては、極めて早い信号であり、また、より
高階調にする場合には、さらに高速パルスが行き来する
こととなり、ディスプレー面から電磁波が放射されるこ
ととなる。
方式における上記のような問題を鑑みてなされたもの
で、図1(A)のような、純然たる電圧による階調表示
方式と、また、図1(A)のような、純然たるパルス幅
による階調表示方式との利点を取り入れた新しい階調表
示方式である。そして、先に指摘したような、極めて微
妙な電圧制御を要求されることも、また、極めて高速な
パルスを要求されることもない。
明確にする目的で、図1(C)に、本発明の例を示す。
やはり図1(A)および(B)と同様に、最初の2周期
が“8”、次の1周期が“4”、最後の1周期が“6”
を表示せんとしたものである。

とにより、その分、自由度を上げ、上記の問題を解決す
るのである。

で、このときの平均実効電圧は0.5である。最後の1
周期は複雑なパルスが組み合わされているが、最初は1
の高さのパルスがあり、次は0.5のパルスがあり、こ
の2つのパルスはそれぞれ同じだけ持続するので、平均
実効電圧は0.75となる。このように、パルスの幅だ
けでなく、パルスの高さも制御することにより、パルス
幅にかかる負担(すなわち高速パルス化)をパルスの高
さで緩和することが出来る。

を達成した。しかるに、本発明では、パルスの高さを
0,1,2,3,4の5段階とし、パルスとしては、幅
が1,2,4,8の4つのパルスだけを用いて、61階
調を達成することができる。当然のことながら、パルス
の種類が少ないということは、それだけ最小パルス幅が
大きいということでもある。

さが1で、長さが1のパルス(最小パルス)で表現でき
る。“2”は高さが1で、長さが2のパルスで表現でき

る。“8”は高さが1で、長さが8のパルスで表現でき
る。“16”は高さが2で、長さが8のパルスで表現で
きる。“32”は高さが4で、長さが8のパルスで表現
できる。

方式では、61階調を達成せんとすれば、80mV刻み
である必要があって、実行不可能であった。以上が本発
明の根幹となるべき部分であり、実際には、各表示装置
に入力する信号は、より複雑である。以下に実施例を示
し、具体的な例を説明する。

る。スイッチングのタイミングは薄膜トランジスタの個
々の性能に依存し、現状の技術では個々のトランジスタ
のこのようなアナログ特性まで正確に制御して作製する
ことは困難であり、ひいては歩留りの低下の要因とな
る。
マトリクス方式に比べると、本発明は、電圧の微妙な制
御が必要とされなくなったとはいえ、10%の電圧の変
動は階調度を1桁悪化させるに十分である。
るというアナログ的手法は本発明を実施するにあたって
はあまり好ましくない。その点、直に起電力回路から電
圧パルスが供給される方式を用いた場合には、、Y線に
与えられるパルスはきれいな矩形波であり、したがっ
て、画素に保持される電圧は、どの画素においてもほぼ
一定であり、本発明の目的とするごとき高階調表示(例
えば、64階調や256階調)にとって好ましいもので
ある。
n,m の電圧とそこに加えられるゲイト線Xn および信号
線(ドレイン線ともいう)Ym の電圧を図5に示す。画
素Zn,m の電圧の図において、点線は実際の信号であ
り、実線は理想的な信号である。さまざまな理由によっ
て、画素に印加される電圧は、理想的な矩形波とはなら
ない。すなわち、ゲイト電極とソース領域の重なりによ
って生じる、いわゆる飛び込み電圧による電圧降下と、
画素電極からの自然放電による電圧の降下、それと、薄
膜トランジスタのON/OFF動作の遅れが主な要因で
ある。アナログ的な電圧供給法を採用しなくともこのよ
うな、アクティブマトリク内部のアナログ要因に基づく
信号波形の乱れは、先に示したように本発明にとって好
ましくない。したがって、実際の回路の設計にあたって
は、これらの要因を十分考慮しなければならない。
最も高い4の段階が、時間32T0 だけ保持され、その
後、時間T0 だけ電圧が0になり、次の時間16T0 で
は、3の段階の電圧が保持され、次の時間2T0 では、
再び電圧は0となり、続く時間8T0 では電圧は4の段
階であり、最後の時間4T0 では、電圧は1である。こ
のようにして、時間T0 あたり、平均212/63の電
圧が得られる。
部に示すような矩形パルスの集まりとなっている。な
お、1フレームの周期を17msecとすれば、T0 =
270μsecであり、例えば、ゲイト電極に印加され
るパルスの幅は、X線の総数が480本であれば、30
0nsecである。Y線に印加されるパルス信号も最小
幅が600nsecである。これは、数MHzの周波数
に対応する。
4分の1の75nsecのゲイトパルスが要求された。
これは、13MHzの周波数に対応し、このような高速
の動作をおこなうには、例えば、アクティブ素子をCM
OS化するようなことが要求された。また、このような
高周波駆動によってディスプレーから放射される電磁波
は問題であった。本発明ではそのような問題は少ない。
もちろん、本発明をCMOS化したクティブ素子を用い
ておこなってもかまわない。

- 【請求項1】 マトリクス状に配列され、駆動用スイッ
チング素子を有する複数の画素によって構成された電気
光学装置において、 入力のアナログ信号を整数値N=n 0 +2n 1 +2 2 n
2 +…+2 k n k (n 0 、n 1 、n 2 、…、n k ∈0、
1、2、…、I(I、kは任意の正整数))となる数字
の組み合わせ(n 0 n 1 n 2 …n k )もしくはそれに対
応する信号に変換し、 光学材料のしきい電圧V 0 、最小パルス幅T 0 に対し
て、前記数字の組み合わせもしくは前記信号に対応す
る、波高n m V 0 /Iおよび幅2 m T 0 (m=0、1、
2、…、k)を有する複数の電圧パルスを発生させ、 前記複数の電圧パルスによって、V 0 N/(1+2+2
2 +…+2 k )Iで表される平均実効電圧を発生させ、
前記複数の画素に各々に対応した前記平均実効値電圧を
供給し、中間的な明るさを表示させる ことを特徴とする
電気光学装置の画像表示方法。
