Abstract

該スイッチング手段(S1;S2)に接続されていて、第1または第2の値を持つ制御信号を受け取るように設けた制御線(108;108′;408)と;を備え、
該スイッチング手段(S1、S2)が、該制御信号が該第1の値を有するとき該出力線(106;406)を該第1の電圧源線(102;402)に接続し、該制御信号が該第2の値を有するとき該出力線(106;406)を該第2の電圧源線(104;404′)に接続するように構成された;

前記第1の電圧を供給するように設けた電圧源線(202)と;
前記共通電極に接続した出力線(206)と;
該電圧源線(202)を該出力線(206)に接続するか;あるいは、該出力線(206)を該電圧源線(202)から切り離すためのスイッチング手段(S3)と;
該スイッチング手段(S3)に接続されていて、第1または第2の値を持つ制御信号を受け取るように設けた制御線(208)と;を備え、
該スイッチング手段(S3)が、該制御信号が該第1の値を有するとき該出力線(206)を該電圧源線(202)に接続し、該制御信号が該第2の値を有するとき該出力線(206)を該電圧源線(202)に接続するように構成された;
電気光学ディスプレイ。

前記第2の電圧を受け取るように設けた各々対応するセンサ画素電極を有する少なくとも1つのセンサ画素(414)をさらに備え、該少なくとも1つのセンサ画素(404)が前記第2の電圧源線(404′)と接続された、項目3に記載の電気光学ディスプレイ。

その正入力が前記少なくとも1つのセンサ画素(414)に接続され、かつその出力がその負入力と前記第2の電圧源線(404′)の両方に接続された差動増幅器(416)をさらに備えた、項目7記載の電気光学ディスプレイ。

該第1および第2の電圧を供給するように構成されたバイアス電源回路(R1、R2、R4、R5、R6、R9、R10、C1、C3、330)と、非書き込みモードのとき該バイアス電源回路の電源を切るための手段とをさらに備えた、項目1に記載の電気光学ディスプレイ。

前記バイアス電源回路の電源オフおよびパワーアップ時に、前記画素電極が前記共通電極と同じ電圧を受け取るように構成された、項目9に記載の電気光学ディスプレイ。

前記電気光学層が、回転2色部材またはエレクトロクロミックディスプレイ媒質を備えた、項目1に記載の電気光学ディスプレイ。
(項目12)
前記電気光学層が粒子ベース電気泳動材料を備え、該電気泳動材料が、懸濁流体と、該懸濁流体に懸濁されていて該電気泳動材料への電界印加時に該懸濁流体を通って移動することができる多数の荷電粒子とを備える、項目1に記載の電気光学ディスプレイ。
(項目13)
前記電気泳動材料が、懸濁流体および荷電粒子が各々カプセル壁を持つ多数のカプセルに封入されたカプセル封入電気泳動材料である、項目12に記載の電気光学ディスプレイ。
(項目14)
前記懸濁流体および荷電粒子が基板に形成された多数のセル中に保持された、項目12に記載の電気光学ディスプレイ。
(項目15)
双安定電気光学媒質層と;該電気光学媒質層の片側に配設されていて各々少なくとも1つの非線形素子と関連づけられた複数の画素電極と;該電気光学媒質層の該画素電極と反対側に配設された共通電極と、を備えた電気光学ディスプレイを動作させる方法であって:
第1の電圧を共通電極に印加する一方、少なくとも2つの異なる電圧を異なる画素電極に印加することによって、電気光学媒質にイメージを書き込むことと;
前に該電気光学媒質に書き込まれたイメージが実質的に維持されるように該画素電極に印加される電圧を制御しつつ、該第1の電圧と異なる第2の電圧を該共通電極に印加することと;
を包含する、方法。
(項目16)
双安定電気光学媒質層と;
該電気光学媒質層の片側に配設されていて各々少なくとも1つの非線形素子と関連づけられた複数の画素電極と;該電気光学媒質層の該画素電極と反対側に配設された共通電極と;共通電極に電圧を供給するための電圧源線と、を備えた電気光学ディスプレイを動作させる方法であって:
第1の電圧を共通電極に印加する一方、少なくとも2つの異なる電圧を異なる画素電極に印加することによって、電気光学媒質にイメージを書き込むことと;
前に該電気光学媒質に書き込まれたイメージが実質的に維持されるように該画素電極に印加される電圧を制御する一方、共通電極を電圧源線から切り離すことによって共通電極上の電圧をフロート状態にすることと;
を包含する方法。

電気光学ディスプレイであって:
双安定電気光学媒質層と;
該電気光学媒質層の片側に配設されていて、少なくとも1つがセンサ画素電極(414)である複数の画素電極と;
該各該画素電極に関連づけられた少なくとも1つの非線形素子と;
該少なくとも1つのセンサ画素電極に所定の電圧を印加するように構成されていて、該非線形素子を介して該画素電極に電圧を印加するための画素駆動手段と;
該電気光学媒質層の該画素電極と反対側に配設された共通電極と;
該所定の電圧と該少なくとも1つのセンサ画素の印加電圧を受け取って、これらの電圧間の差を決定するように構成された測定手段と;
を備えた、電気光学ディスプレイ。

電気光学ディスプレイであって、該ディスプレイは、
双安定電気光学媒質層と;
該電気光学媒質層の片側に配設された複数の画素電極と;
該各該画素電極に関連づけられた少なくとも1つの非線形素子と;
該非線形素子を介して該画素電極に電圧を印加するように構成された画素駆動手段と;
該電気光学媒質層の該画素電極と反対側に配設された共通電極と;
少なくとも1つの電圧を供給するように設けた共通電極電圧源線(202)と;
該電圧源線(202)を該共通電極に接続するスイッチング手段(S3)であって、該電圧源線(202)が該共通電極に接続される動作状態と、該電圧源線(202)が該共通電極から切り離されることにより共通電極の電圧がフロート状態になる試験状態とを有するスイッチング手段(S3)と;を備え、
該画素駆動手段が、該スイッチング手段が該試験状態のとき、該非線形素子を介して単一の所定電圧をすべての画素電極に供給するように構成されており、
該ディスプレイは、該スイッチング手段(S3)が該試験状態のとき、該単一の所定電圧と該共通電極の電圧とを受け取って、これらの電圧間の差を決定するように構成された測定手段(726)をさらに備えた、電気光学ディスプレイ。

電気光学ディスプレイであって:
双安定電気光学媒質層と;

該少なくとも1つのセンサ画素電極(414)上の電圧を表す信号を受け取ると共に、該共通電極に印加される電圧を該信号に基づいて変化させるように構成された共通電極電圧制御手段(830、720′、722′)と;
を備えた、電気光学ディスプレイ。
(項目19)
双安定電気光学媒質層と;
該電気光学媒質層の片側に配設された複数の画素電極と;
該各該画素電極に関連づけられた少なくとも1つの非線形素子と;
該非線形素子を介して該画素電極に電圧を印加するように構成された画素駆動手段と;
該電気光学媒質層の該画素電極と反対側に配設された共通電極と;
を備えた電気光学ディスプレイを動作させる方法であって、該方法は:
該画素駆動手段を用いてディスプレイのすべての該画素電極に所定電圧を印加することと;
該所定電圧と、該画素電極への該所定電圧の印加時に該共通電極に現われる電圧との差を表す値を保存することと;
その後、該保存した値に基づく電圧を該共通電極に印加する一方、イメージを該電気光学媒質に書き込ませる電圧を該画素電極に印加することと;
を包含する、方法。
添付図面の図4に示す共通電極制御手段(全体を符号400で示す)は、図1に示す制御手段100の別態様であり、この態様では、ディスプレイ自体に配設された1つ以上の「センサ」画素を利用する。制御手段400は、線402、406、408および410、インバータ412、スイッチS1およびS2を備え、これらすべて、図1に示す制御手段100の対応する符号の要素と実質的に同様に機能する。しかしながら、この場合、バイアス制御回路によって制御手段400の第2の電圧入力404′に電圧VSMが供給されるだけではない;それ以外に、センサ画素414上の電圧が差動増幅器416の正入力に供給され、かつこの増幅器の出力がその負入力と線404′の両方に供給されるようになっている。
回路900は下記の如く動作する。まず、すべての列電極をVSMに設定し、コンデンサC1が共通電極電圧VCOMに充電されるように、スイッチS4を閉じ、スイッチS3を開いた状態で、ディスプレイを走査する。次に、ディスプレイ上の実イメージを書き込む間S4を開き、かつS3を閉じるように、制御線208の上の信号を変化させる。S4が開いていると、増幅器722″よりなる電圧フォロワが、コンデンサC1に保存された電圧VCOMを必ず線202および206上にも生じさせ、したがって共通電極にも生じさせる。必要ならば、S4とC1との間にさらに追加の電圧フォロワを挿入してもよい。このように、スイッチS4とコンデンサC1とを組み合わせた回路は、アナログサンプル・アンド・ホールド回路としての機能を果たし、その出力が、ディスプレイの更新時に共通電極を駆動するために用いられる。この方法は、コンデンサC1上の電圧を所望値に維持するために、多分どのイメージ更新の前であっても、少数のブランクフレームを周期的に走査する必要があり、このようなブランクフレームの走査によってイメージ更新に要する時間が長くなるという短所がある。
Claims (1)
- 電気光学ディスプレイを動作させる方法であって、該電気光学ディスプレイは、
双安定電気光学媒質の層と、
該電気光学媒質の層の片側に配置された複数の画素電極と、
各画素電極に関連づけられた少なくとも1つの非線形素子と、
該非線形素子を介して該画素電極に電圧を印加するように構成された画素駆動手段と、
該電気光学媒質の層の該画素電極と反対側にある共通電極と
を備え、
該方法は、
該画素駆動手段によって該ディスプレイのすべての画素電極に所定の電圧を印加することと、
該所定の電圧と、該画素電極への該所定の電圧の印加の間に該共通電極に現われる電圧との差を表す値を格納することと、
その後、該格納された値に依存した電圧を該共通電極に印加する一方、イメージを該電気光学媒質に書き込ませる複数の電圧を該画素電極に印加することと
を含む、方法。
