Abstract

Description
本発明は、電子ディスプレイのためのアドレッシング装置および方法に関し、具体的には、カプセル化電気泳動(electrophoretic)ディスプレイのためのアドレッシング装置および方法に関する。
従来、液晶ディスプレイ等の電子ディスプレイは、2枚のガラス間に光電気活性材料を挟むことによって作製されてきた。多くの場合、各ガラス片は、インジウムスズ酸化物を用いて形成された、エッチングされた透明電極構造を有する。第1の電極構造は、アドレッシングされ得る(すなわち、ある視覚的状態から別の視覚的状態に変えられ得る)ディスプレイの全てのセグメントを制御する。時に対向電極と呼ばれる第2の電極は、全てのディスプレイセグメントを1つの大きな電極としてアドレッシングし、通常、最終的な画像に望ましくない後方電極のワイヤ接続部のいずれとも重なり合わないように設計される。あるいは、第2の電極は、ディスプレイの特定のセグメントを制御するようにもパターニングされる。これらのディスプレイにおいては、ディスプレイのアドレッシングされていない領域は、くっきりと見える。
本発明の目的は、容易に製造され得、電力消費が少なく(あるいは、双安定性表示装置の場合には電力消費が無い)、従って様々な用途に組み込まれ得る、高度に可撓性の反射性表示装置を提供することである。本発明は、カプセル化された電気泳動表示媒体を備える印刷可能な表示装置を特色とする。結果として得られる表示装置は可撓性である。表示媒体は印刷可能であり得るので、表示装置自体が安価に製造され得る。
また別の局面では、本発明は、電気的にアドレス可能なディスプレイに関する後方電極構造に関する。この構造は、基板と、基板の第1の面上に配置された第1の電極と、基板の第2の面上に配置された導体とを含む。基板は、第1の電極および導体の両方と電気的に連通する少なくとも1つの導電性バイアを規定する。

動度の大きさは、平均した青粒子54の電気泳動移動度を上回り、平均した青粒子54の電気泳動移動度は、緑粒子56の平均電気泳動移動度を上回る。一例として、100ミリボルト(mV)のゼータ電位を有する赤粒子種と、60mVのゼータ電位を有する青粒子と、20mVのゼータ電位を有する緑粒子とが存在し得る。カプセル20は、カプセルに電界を印加する2つの電極32と42との間に配置される。
Claims (5)
- カプセル化電気泳動ディスプレイ媒体を含むカプセル化電気泳動ディスプレイであって、該媒体をアドレッシングする少なくとも1つの薄膜トランジスタアレイによって特徴づけられる、カプセル化電気泳動ディスプレイ。
- カプセル化電気泳動ディスプレイを製造するための方法であって、
(a)その上に薄膜トランジスタアレイが配置された基板を設けるステップと、
(b)カプセル化電気泳動ディスプレイ媒体を、該媒体が該アレイと電気的に連通するように該基板上に印刷するステップと
によって特徴づけられる、方法。 - カプセル化電気泳動ディスプレイを製造するための方法であって、
(a)その上に薄膜トランジスタアレイが配置された第1の基板を設けるステップと、
(b)第2の基板を設けるステップと、
(c)該第2の基板上にカプセル化電気泳動ディスプレイ媒体を印刷するステップと、
(d)該カプセル化電気泳動ディスプレイ媒体が、該薄膜トランジスタアレイと電気的に連通するように、該第1の基板を該第2の基板に隣接して配置するステップと、
によって特徴づけられる、方法。 - カプセル化電気泳動ディスプレイを製造するための方法であって、
(a)第1の基板を設けるステップと、
(b)該第1の基板上に第1の電極を印刷するステップと、
(c)該第1の電極上に誘電体層を印刷するステップと、
(d)該誘電体層上に第2の電極を印刷するステップと、
(e)第2の基板を設けるステップと、
(f)該第2の基板上にカプセル化電気泳動ディスプレイ媒体を印刷するステップと、
(g)該カプセル化電気泳動ディスプレイ媒体が、該第2の電極と電気的に連通するように、該第1の基板を該第2の基板に隣接して配置するステップと、
によって特徴づけられる、方法。 - 実質的に重なっていない電気泳動移動度を有する少なくとも3つの粒子種を含み、時間および振幅の両方において制御される電気的パルスのシーケンスに応答して、該粒子種の1つを支配的に表示するマルチカラーディスプレイを特徴とする、カプセル化電気泳動ディスプレイ。
