Abstract
885,484. Regulating; rotary valves. BORGWARNER CORPORATION. Oct. 6, 1958 [Oct. 7, 1957], No. 31883/58. Class 7(6). In a reciprocating shuttle type metering and distributing device, the supply of fuel to and delivery from the opposite sides of the shuttle 88 is controlled by separate rotary valves 24. Fuel is supplied by a pump 113, Fig. 6, to an inlet 43 and flows from spaces 35, 42, Fig. 2, through passages 46..49, Fig. 4, to star-shaped chambers 44, 45, Fig. 3, which are closed by graphite plates 30, 41, having ports 50..57, Fig. 3, connecting with the chambers 44, 45, and ports 58..61 and 70..73, connected to passages 104, Fig. 6, leading to the fuel injectors. The control passages 83, 85, in the rotors 24 are arranged so that when passage 83 is in communication with a port 50..53 to supply fuel from the chamber 44 through passage 95 to the left hand side of shuttle 88 the passage 85 is in communication with a port 70..73 to connect the right hand side of the shuttle 88 to an injector and vice versa. The rotors are driven by shafts 16, 18, through universal couplings 25 and are held against the plates 30, 41, by fuel pressure acting on sealing rings 38 which contact the rotors through ball races 37. The stroke of the shuttle 88 is controlled by a movable stop 90 adjusted by a wedge 132 connected to a piston 134 actuated by intake manifold suction. Fuel flows from the space 42 through a passage 128 to cooling chambers around the rotors 24 and returns to supply through passage 131.
