Abstract

972,446. Regulating I.C. engines. SIMMONDS PRECISION PRODUCTS Inc., and S.U. CARBURETTER CO. Ltd. Sept. 6, 1963 [June 27, 1962], No. 24602/62. Heading FIB. An I.C. engine fuel injection system in which fixed-orifice fuel injection nozzles, situated in inlet ports or induction passages, are supplied from at least one common chamber has an elastically contractible pressurized fuel reservoir 6, Fig. 1, with two outlet ports 13, 14 communicating with the opposite ends of the bore 17 of a shuttle-plunger pump under the control of valve means 22 which opens each port in turn whilst the other remains closed so that the shuttle plunger 18 is impelled by the pressurized fuel to deliver a metered fuel charge to the common chamber 38 at approximately constant pressure. Pressurized fuel from pump 8 is delivered through pipe 7 to chamber 6 which is sealed off by a resilient diaphragm 9, e.g. of neoprene, loaded by spring 10, pressure in chamber 6 being regulated by a valve 19 which spills off excess fuel back to a supply tank. Valve plate 22, which is driven from the engine by shaft 23 and eccentric 24, is nipped between face 12 and face 25 of a block 26, which is assembled with the middle part of diaphragm 9 and a spring-loaded block 29. In operation, pressurized fuel from chamber 6 passes through port 13, when uncovered by valve plate 22, and through passage 15 into chamber 17 to move a stainless steel shuttle plunger 18 to the left (in Fig. I) so that metered fuel in chamber 17 is forced through passage 16, port 14, annular groove 32, passage 34, annular groove 33, passages 35, 36 and 37 into the common chamber 38 and through passages 39 to individual fuel injectors 40. With a further half revolution of shaft 23, the flow in passages 14 and 15 is reversed and the shuttle plunger moves to the right to deliver a further metered fuel charge. The stroke of the shuttle plunger 18 is adjusted by cam 42. In another embodiment an epicyclicallydriven valve plate 22A, Fig. 2, having external gear teeth 49 which mesh with internal teeth 50 on the housing 2A, has pairs of ports 52, 53 interconnected by ducts 54 which are brought into sequential communication with port 14 and passage 35 and with port 13 and passage 55. The passages 35, 55 supply, through ducts 36, 56 and 45, 46, separate common chambers 47, 48 each supplying a group of injection nozzles 40. Specification 708,592 is referred to.
