Abstract

991,948. Fuel-injection pumps. T. W. SCHETTLER (PROPRIETARY) Ltd. April 4, 1963 [April 10,1962], No. 13378/63. Heading F1A. A fuel injection pump and distributer comprises a rotor 16, Fig. 1, housing pistons 36 engaging a tapered, lobed cam track 44 located in housing 10 by tongues 47 engaging a helical groove 45, such that the cam track is movable axially and angularly against a spring 54 by hydraulic pressure supplied to a chamber 50 by enginedriven gear pumps 20, 22, to vary the pump timing and output according to engine speed. In the embodiment of Fig. 1, two pistons 36 are provided and draw fuel from spring chamber 56, supplied by a feed pump, and deliver the fuel via distributer passages 26, 28. In the embodiment of Fig. 3, the pump has four pistons and inlet valves 90. Spring 54 is connected to an accelerator pedal through a piston member 84 and a spring-loaded coupling. Spring chamber 56 is fed with fuel by one of four gear pumps of different outputs driven by drive shaft gear 150. During increase in engine speed two of the gear pumps are successively connected to chamber 50 via valves 106a controlled by the pressure in chamber 56, which is proportional to engine speed, acting through preset pressure-relief valve 88. When over-speeding of the engine occurs, the fourth gear pump is connected to -chamber 50 via a further preset valve to move cam 44 to its zero-output position. Chamber 50 has a bleed passage 80 leading to the suction side of one of the gear pumps.
