Abstract

829,233. Supply systems for space discharge apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. June 27, 1958 [June 28, 1957], No. 20524/57. Class 38 (4). A circuit arrangement for starting and operating an electric discharge lamp 5 having heatable cathodes comprises a ballast inductor 8 connected between a supply terminal 1 and a lamp terminal 3, a capacitor 9 being connected in parallel with the discharge path of the lamp 5, so arranged that the inductor 8 and the capacitor 9 are at, or near, resonance at the supply frequency, windings 11, 12 associated with the inductor 8 being provided to supply heater current to the lamp electrodes. A resistor 10 is provided in series with the capacitor 9 to improve the waveform of the supply current, to improve the stability of the lamp discharge and to render the lamp starting voltage less dependent on variations in the frequency of the supply voltage. An earthed conductor 13 is included to facilitate starting. Two or more lamps may be serially connected across the supply terminals 1, 2.
