Abstract

662,235. Stuffing - box substitutes. NICHOLLS, T. W. March 23, 1950 [March 23, 1949] No. 7879/49. Class 122(v). Means for rotating a driven shaft of a rotary compressor or the like by a power shaft through a coupling, permitting a modicum of free axial movement, situated within a stuffing box, said coupling being provided with sealing members on each side and wherein a fluid connection is provided between each end of the driven shaft, comprises a coupling 8 between a driving shaft 4 and a driven shaft 6 having an axial bore 7, in a stuffing box 2 closed by an end cover 3. Flexible bellows 9a, 9b carrying rubbing rings 10a, 10b respectively are secured to the coupling 8, the rings engaging complementary faces on the stuffing box and end cover. A spring 18 is interposed between the rings 10a, 10b. Fluid pressure from the bore 7 acts on the coupling 8 which engages a pimple 15 on the shaft 4 causing a collar 14 on the shaft 4 to engage a surface on the cover 3. A port 17 connects the stuffing to the suction side of the compressor. Rings 16 fitted on the coupling 8 align it with the shafts 4, 6. In a modification the bellows and ring 9b, 10b are dispensed with, and the coupling 8 is formed with a surface engaging the cover 3. In a further modification the coupling 8 is formed directly on the shaft 4, and is formed with a surface engaging the end cover.
