Boxes.-In a rotary pump or compressor of the type described in Specifications 230,241 and 233,423, [both in Class 110 (ii), Rotary engines &c.], with a recess in the casings at the back of the pumping members in communication with a part of the apparatus on the discharge side of the pump, a floating stuffing-box 20 surrounding the shaft is mounted in the recess by means of a flexible metallic packing 25 in the form of a bellows, secured to a cover plate 19 and the head 24 of the stuffing-box. A collar 26 on the shaft 9 is mounted in a thrust bearing 30 positioned between a flange 27 and cap 28 secured to the stuffing-box. By this arrangement, an outward pull on the stuffing-box due to the collapse of the flexible packings 25 under the force of the fluid pressure, is transmitted to the driving shaft and tends to draw the pumping members away from the front wall of the pumping chamber and relieve the friction due to the pressure in the recess action in the opposite direction. Adjustable stops 31 limit the outward movement of the stuffing-box. Instead of a bellows, a diaphragm may be used.
