652,443. Stuffing-boxes and substitutes therefor. UPTON, E. J., and FISHER, J. W. May 26,1948, No. 14229. [Class 122(v)] In a pressure gland assembly for a rotatable shaft 8 extending from a high pressure zone to a low pressure zone, a flange 10 fixed to the shaft 8 engages a fixed gland seating 11; a sleeve 24 fixed against rotation but capable of slight lateral movement with the shaft 8 fits closely about the shaft 8 on the low pressure side of the flange 10; and a chamber enclosing the part of the shaft 8 between the flange 10 and the sleeve 24 is supplied with a liquid at a pressure at least as great as that in the high pressure zone, the sleeve 24 forming a slowly leaking closure between the chamber and the low pressure zone. An oil reservoir 22, communicating with the high pressure zone via the tubes 7, 42 and with the chamber via a pipe 23 is arranged higher than the chamber so that a pressure is obtained in the chamber, greater by the hydrostatic head, than that in the high pressure zone. Oil leaking past the sleeve 24 collects in a cup 27 from which it flows to a reservoir 43 to be pumped by hydraulic pump 44 back to the reservoir 22. In a modification of a further embodiment, a packed gland which can be adjusted to cancel the leakage takes the place of a single sleeve.
