Abstract

[Class 40 (iv)] The magnet system of a transducer is provided with one or more auxiliary polepieces to form an auxiliary gap in order to divert a part of the magnetic flux flowing in the main gap away from the diaphragm or through a different path in the diaphragm. In Fig. 1, the diaphragm 2 lies slightly within one end of an annular permanent magnet 1 between the main polepiece 4, which carries the operating coil 5, and an auxiliary polepiece 6, the latter being apertured for the passage of sound to or from the diaphragm. In Fig. 2, the polepiece 4 stands on a short bar magnet 1 located at the centre of a cup 8 of magnetic material, and the diaphragm 2 is supported by a conical member 7. In Fig. 3, the permanent magnet takes the form of a flat bar or disc 1 polarized from the centre to the ends or circumference, and the diaphragm is supported by an annular member 9. In Figs. 5, 7 (not shown), a bar magnet has two pairs of polepieces attached to it, the pairs being located on either side of the diaphragm. In an analogous arrangement, Fig. 9, the magnet 11 has consequent poles, while in Fig. 11 both pairs of polepieces 12, 13 and 15, 16 are on the same side of the diaphragm. A practical construction of the arrangement of Fig. 1 is described for use as a telephone earpiece, Figs. 12-14 (not shown), the air spaces and holes on the two sides of the diaphragm being dimensioned as described in Specifications 481,740 and 503,676 to provide appropriate acoustic systems.
