Abstract

893,838. Loud-speakers. TANNOY Ltd. Jan. 1, 1960 [Oct. 14, 1958], No. 32773/58. Class 40 (4). In a moving coil loud-speaker having two diaphragms, driven by respective speech coils, in separate air gaps arranged in series in a magnetic circuit, with one air gap having a higher flux density than the other, a magnetic shunt of small enough cross-sectional area to be appreciably saturated by the magnetic flux bridges the other air gap. A low-frequency diaphragm 1 is operated by a coil 14 moving in an annular air gap 15 surrounding one end of a cylindrical polepiece 16, while a high-frequency diaphragm 2 is operated by a coil 10 moving in an air gap 18 at the opposite end of the polepiece 16, a sleeve 21 constituting the ring magnet of the loud-speaker. A plate 19, centred about the axis of the system by a non-magnetic ring 23, completes the magnetic circuit between air gap 15 and sleeve 21 and a thinner plate 20 in closer proximity to coil 17 than plate 19 is to coil 14, completes the circuit at the other end of the polepiece 16. A flange 27, of small cross-sectional area so that it may be easily saturated, on plate 20, shunts the air gap 18 but does not alter the flux through the air gap 18 by a significant amount, although it causes the flux in air gap 15 to be appreciably increased (up to 20%), thus allowing a greater energy input to be used with the larger diaphragm 1.
