442,900. Magnets. ENGLISH STEEL CORPORATION, Ltd., Vickers Works, and SWAN, J. C., 74, Totley Brook. Road, Dore, both in Sheffield. Sept. 17, 1934, No. 26614. [Class 35] [See also Group XXXIX] A permanent magnet for loud-speakers &c. has two coaxial annular air gaps in series, the inner gap being shunted by a piece of magnetic material so arranged that the flux across the two gaps is in the required proportions. In the arrangement shown, an annular magnet 15 is provided with a plate 21 forming an outer polepiece for the outer air gap and a base plate 10. To the plate 10 are secured a central stem 12, which may be of magnet steel, carrying a central polepiece 13, and an annular member 16 carrying an annular polepiece 19 and serving as a shunt for the gap between the members 13 and 19. A ring 25 of non-magnetic material may be introduced to increase the reluctance of the shunt, or the shunt may be of such size as to be normally saturated. A coil 32 in the inner gap is carried by a diaphragm 29 attached by a ring 31 to a cone 27 mounted on the annular polepiece 19 and a coil 38 in the outer gap is carried by a diaphragm 37 attached by rings 34:, 35 to arms 33 mounted on the plate 21. In a modification, the diaphragm 29 is supported by arms attached to the ring 35 and is separate from the cone 27, which is retained as a baffle.
