Abstract
311,486. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., and Parry, R. D. Feb. 27, 1928. Diaphragms; magnetic instruments.-A conetype loud-speaker &c. comprises one or more coaxial circular flexible divisions dividing its diaphragm into two or more contiguous and preferably dfferent-sized portions, each of which is provided with separate operating means. The diaphragm may be in the form of a dish, cap of a sphere, cone or truncated cone, whilst the operating means may be reeds or other known types of armature devices, annular coils, closed rings of conducting material or annular magnetic members. The Figure shows a moving coil arrangement in which the diaphragm 1 is divided into two unequal portions 2, 3, the portion 2 being flexibly supported at 4 to a casing 5 whilst the portion 3 is flexibly supported at 6 to the portion 2. Each portion is positively actuated by coils 7, 8 located in the annular air gaps 10, 11 of a magnet structure 9. The co-operating pole pieces forming the air gaps are of opposite polarity. By splitting up the diaphragm into two unequal portions, one portion can be arranged to produce the high frequency and the other the low frequency vibrations. The Provisional Specification refers to a split disc diaphragm.
