Abstract
486,801. Loud - speakers. FURSTFNZELLER, J. Jan. 29, 1937, No. 2717. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, July 30, 1937.] [Class 40 (iv)] In apparatus for the reproduction of sound by at least two loud-speakers which are constructed to reproduce the upper and lower portions respectively of the frequency range and in which the diaphragm of the low-frequency loud-speaker comprises convex and concave portions arranged so that when viewed from the front of the loud-speaker, the diaphragm is of convex shape in its central portion and of concave shape adjacent its periphery, the moving coil is carried on a cylindrical extension b fixed to the diaphragm along the depression c of the concave portion of the diaphragm and is arranged within an annular magnet arrangement m, n leaving an open area behind said convex portion which has a value above 50 per cent of the area of the cylindrical extension b. The annular magnet arrangement may be a permanent magnet of closed cross-section except for a slot for the coil, or formed by two annular rings shaped and assembled to form a closed cross-section except for a gap for the coil. Alternatively the annular rings may be of magnetic material and enclose an energizing coil. In a modified arrangement, Fig. 5, the magnet system comprises two magnetic rings d, e mounted within the limbs of a number of U-shaped permanent magnets h and spaced by non-magnetic members f. Fig. 4 shows a modified construction of diaphragm comprising two concave portions, two convex portions, and two cylindrical extensions b, b<1> carrying coils in the gaps of annular magnet members m, n, m<1>, n<1>, and the arrangement is such that the area of the open space behind the convex portions is greater than 50 per cent of the area of the cylindrical extension which is of the greater area. The concave and convex portions of the diaphragm may be of curved form. The voice coil or coils may be connected to an amplifier without including an output transformer.
