Abstract

469,286. Loud-speakers. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Aug. 28, 1936, No. 23644. Convention date, Feb. 29. [Class 40 (iv)] A loud-speaker comprises a large diaphragm and a small diaphragm operated by a magnet system and a horn with its throat adjacent the smaller diaphragm and its mouth adjacent the central portion of the large diaphragm which is provided with apertures for the passage of sound waves from the smaller diaphragm. The magnet system for the larger diaphragm 20 comprises a channelled ring 14 of magnetic material to which a polepiece 13 is secured to form an air gap 19 in which an edge-wound coil 32 is located. The diaphragm has a central dome-shaped portion 21, a flat annular portion 22 which is clamped to the polepiece 13, and an intermediate arched portion 23 which is formed with apertures 29 and slots 30 covered on both sides by strips 31 of rubber. A circular portion of the diaphragm 20 adjacent the mouth of the horn 43 is formed with apertures 27 covered by a screen 28 of silk or metallic gauze. The magnet system for the smaller diaphragm 47 is supported by arms 57 and comprises magnetic members 36, 37 forming a gap 41 for a coil 56 attached to the diaphragm 47 at the junction between its domed central portion and an annular flange by which it is attached to the member 36. The space beneath the diaphragm 47 is connected to the throat of the horn by passages 55 in a plug member 54.
