Abstract
547,728. Telephone instruments. SIEMENS BROS. & CO., Ltd., and SUTTON, G. W. March 3, 1941, No. 7327/42. Divided out of 547,707. [Class 40 (iv)] [Also in Group XXII] In an electromagnetic telephone instrument of the kind having a balanced armature co-operating with a current coil and a fixed magnetic field, the magnetic system comprises a permanent magnet, Fig. 6, and pole shoes 13 which are clamped against the permanent magnet and at the same time clamp the armature 1 in position. Each pole-shoe comprises a flat plate 13, Figs. 4 and 6, from which pole pieces 14, 15 are bent out. As shown in Figs. 1 and 5, the armature 1 has side lugs 3 at one end. This end is thickened by a U-shaped liner 4 of non- magnetic material and is clamped between one pair of pole pieces 14. The other end is free to vibrate between the other pair of pole pieces 15 and has a lug 2 connected by a rod 18 to a sound diaphragm 19. The parts are clamped together by screws screwing into spacing pillars 12, 16. The pillar 12 lies in a slot in the permanent magnet; and the pillars 16, two in number, lie on opposite sides of the armature and are made slightly short, so that the clamping action may be tightened or loosened slightly to adjust the air gap between the pole pieces 15, the pole shoes having sufficient flexibility to allow this action. In a modification, Fig. 2, the armature 1 has narrow necks 7 at the middle part of each edge connected to thick side strips 4 which are clamped between the two pairs of pole pieces, leaving the armature free to vibrate at each end about a middle axis through the necks 7. The armature is surrounded bv a coil 17 situated between the pairs of pole-pieces. The diaphragm 19 is clamped between a ring 20 and a disc 21 ; and the magnetic system is fastened to the ring 20 by screws 28. This assembly is enclosed in a casing 22 with an ear piece 23 fastened together by a screw ring 25. The ear piece 23 has a central aperture 24 having a flared inner edge opposite perforations 27.
