Abstract
617,200. Ships' hatchways. MEGE, P. A. July 2, 1946, No. 19772. Convention date, July 20, 1945. [Class 113 (i)] In a hatch cover of the kind in which metal sections are hinged together and to the coaming so that they are folded and unfolded in opening and closing the hatch, each cover section is constructed caisson fashion of transverse reinforcing plates and longitudinals, the whole being clothed with external metal sheeting, all welded together and presenting a practically flush external surface. The invention relates in particular to hatch covers as described in Specification 466,019. The jointing means between the folding sections, the abutting sections, and between the cover and the coaming are arranged below external surface. The joint between abutting sections b, b<SP>1</SP> is shown. The sections terminate in bulb irons 18 which bear on a gasket 16 housed in a channel iron welded to an arm 19. When the hatch is closed the gasket 16 is held tight on the bulb irons by tightening the nuts on bolts 20 which, when the hatch is to be opened, may be turned down clear of the arm 19.
