Abstract
629,626. Hatch covers. McNEIL, P. E. Feb. 14, 1947, No. 4297. Convention date, March 7, 1946. [Class 113 (i)] In a hatch cover comprising two lids 2 hinged to the sides of the coaming 1, each incorporating a tubular beam 4, and arranged to close in the manner of a pair of double doors, when closed the lids have a small clearance between them and are held in position by yokes 22. A watertight joint is formed by placing a gasket 31 of soft jointing material in a channel between the lids and compressing this by inserting wedges between a bolster bar 33 and hinged cleats which allow relative movement between the lids. Similarly a water-tight joint is made between the lids and the hatch coaming by inserting wedges 29 behind bolster bars 26 to compress a gasket 25. A gutter is secured to one of the lids to drain off any water which would otherwise fall between them into the hold when the lids are closed and the water-tight jointing is not tightened down. The lids may be turned on their hinges to lie on the deck in which position their upper surfaces present a gangway 16 round the hatch way. Each lid has a lifting plate 43 with a hole on either side of a line Y, Y drawn through the centre of the hinge and the centre of gravity of the lid so that by using a shackle in the appropriate hole the occurrence of a dead-centre position is avoided when raising or lowering the lid.
