Abstract

705,222. Hatch covers. KUMMERMAN, H. Oct. 30; 1951 [Nov. 7, 1950], No. 25397/51. Class 113(1) In a watertight closing device for steel hatch covers comprising sections adapted to be stowed vertically upon a tilting motion from their horizontal position about a central pivot, a U-shaped covering member 19 hingedly mounted at 20 on the batch 1 is adapted to cover and contact two adjacent projecting members, one of which, 13, is provided on the edge of the hatch 1 and the other (15, 16) on the adjacent edge of the cover section (section 2 or section 3). The projecting member 13 on the hatch is cut at 14 whereas the other member is provided with a channel member 17 fitting in the interruptions in the member 13 and adapted for draining any water leaking between the jointcovering member and the side edges of the hatch cover section. In the embodiment of Fig. 3 the wing 24 of the member 19 engages the member 15 to prevent excessive depression of the sealing 21, and a locking device 23 is provided to hold the assembly against motion. In another embodiment the sealing 21 engages the member 13 and the member 19 has an extension engaging sealing in the projection 15 on the cover section, a screw jack being provided for clamping the joint. The arrangement of Fig. 3 is also shown modified for a flushdeck arrangement. As shown in Fig. 4 adjacent sections 2, 3 (and the end cover and the end of the hatch) are sealed by a member 25 on one section engaging rubber 26 held in position on the other section by a member 27 welded thereto.
