[Class 113 (i)] Hatch covers are held in position by jointcarrying shutter members hinged to the coaming, these members making a water-tight joint with the side or top of the hatch coaming and also if required with the sides or ends of the hatch coaming. The hinged locking-members working on pins 20, Fig. 4, mounted on brackets 23 carried by the channel iron 26 secured to the coaming 10 are provided with brackets with which bolts 46 hinged to the hatch section are designed to engage and to be fastened by butterfly nuts 48. The shutter members include channel bars 19 holding wooden bars 27 in which are embedded gaskets 30, 31 of jute or rubber which respectively engage a bar 32 on the hatch section and the coaming angle 34. In a modification, T-headed bolts are employed in place of the swinging bolts 46. In a further modification, the locking member 130, Fig. 19, engages the top of the hatch section. In this case the angle member 129, welded to the hinged bar 131 carries the struts 142, 138 faced with packing-material and designed to engage with the hatch section 121 and the bar 120 carried by the coaming 118. The joints between the hatch sections is sealed by locking bars 57, Fig. 6, comprising channels holding packing- material 59. Swinging locking-bolts 62, 63 carried by the hatch sections 6 engage with the gapped lugs 60 on the locking-bars and are secured by fly nuts 66. The ends of the locking bars extend over the coaming and are further secured by fly-nuts carried by the main locking-members. In a further modification, the hatch sections 124 rest on packed channel bars 127 resting on the hatch webs 126. The hatch sections may be of box section with angles 125, Fig. 20, welded to the top-plates. Internal webs and transverse intercostal may be employed to stiffen the section.
