[Also in Groups XXV and XXXIII] In the closing means for railway cars or, as shown in Fig. 5, a ship's hold a rack 47, which may be disposed centrally across the hatch cover 28 or be duplicated, one at each end, is engaged by a pinion 48 driven by a motor 49 secured to the coaming, rotation of the pinion sliding the cover across the hatchway to the position shown for the cover 27. On reaching this position the roller 35 leaves the ramp 46 and the rollers 29, 30 enter partly into slots in the coaming to lower the hatch on to a weather seal. To open the hatch the ram 45 first extends to operate the bell crank levers 39, 38 which engage the rollers and raise the cover from the seal, the motor 49 then sliding back the cover. In a modification, Fig. 6, the cover operating means comprise a pinion 63 rotatably carried on the rams 65 and co-operating with racks 62 secured to the covers and with fixed racks 66. In the embodiment of Fig. 1 the covers 1 and 2 are hinged at their inner edges. The outer edge of cover 1 being hinged to the coaming, the outer edge of cover 2 carries rollers 6 and is movable along the hatchway during opening and closing movements. A motor secured to this latter edge drives, through shafts, bevel gearing and universal joints, the pinions 19 being disposed one at each end of the hatch side, and engaging racks 23 secured to the coaming.
