Abstract
1,037,551. Hatch covers. M.E.P. CO. Ltd. Dec. 31, 1963 [April 11, 1963], No. 14485/63. Heading B7S. [Also in Division E2] Each half of a ship's hatch is provided with covers 11 and 12, hinged together at 25, which are moved to an open position (dashed in Fig. 1) by an electric motor through reduction gearing. The cover 11 has two arms 13 which are pivoted to deck brackets 14 and are joined by connecting rods to crank discs 20 mounted on shafts rotated by an electric motor through reduction gearing, Figs. 2 and 14 (not shown). The reduction gearing comprises one or more pairs of worm and worm-wheel gears. Continued operation of the motor and consequent rotation of the crank discs 20 will cause the covers to be alternately raised and lowered, thus removing the possibility of jamming. The length of the con-rods is adjustable and the system may be operated manually in the event of a power failure. The trailing cover 12 has rollers 26 running on rails 27, Fig. 6 (not shown), on the hatch coaming 10. Rubber packing 28 is provided between the covers and the coaming and is glued and held in position by a retaining bar 31. At the corners of the hatch the rubber strips are connected with dovetail joints. A seal, Fig. 11 (not shown), is provided between the covers 11 and 12 and comprises a rubber strip 32 bonded into a channel 33 on the cover 12. A gutter 35 and drain hole 36 are also provided. A similar arrangement to that of Fig. 11 is provided between the two trailing covers which meet in the closed position at the centre of the hatch.
