A hatch cover comprises two sections A and B, Fig. 6, provided with gaskets round their periphery which in the closed position engage a sealing rail round the sides and ends of the hatchway. Each section is provided with two pairs of rollers 53, 55 pivotally mounted to the sections, the roller mountings being engaged by means such as jacks 59 secured at their other end to the section so that on actuating the jacks when the cover is closed the sections are lifted to break the seal. The rollers 53, 55 are adapted to run on rails on the deck and hatch coaming respectively, suitable stops being provided. A pair of rollers 74 are mounted on each side of the hatchway adjacent the outer ends and cables A<SP>1</SP>, B<SP>1</SP> provided each being attached to the inner end of the sections A, B respectively and extending along these sections, when in closed position, round a pulley 74, under a pulley 74 at the opposite end of the hatchway and secured to the outer end of the sections B, A respectively such that outward movement of one section from the closed position causes the other section to open and inward movement of one section causes the other sections to close. The section B is provided on its underside with two racks 61, 63, Fig. 5, engaged by two meshing pinions 64, 67. The pinion 64 is driven by an electric motor and the pinion 67 is an idler pinion thus depending upon the direction of rotation of the motor the section B, and hence through the cables the section A, are opened or closed. The motor is mounted beyond the end of the hatchway in a closed housing extending from the covering.
