Abstract

1,180,603. Hatch covers and operating mechanism. ASSOCIATED CARGO GEAR A.B. 6 April, 1967 [29 April, 1966], No. 15873/67. Heading E2M. An improved hatch cover and mechanism comprises a hatch cover section 6 having a packing strip 5, a hatch coaming 1 having a ledge 4 to cooperate with the packing strip, a rack 7 having one portion 13 extending transversely from the packing strip beyond the adjacent edge of the hatch cover and a second portion 19 extending in the opposite direction, the pitch of the teeth 8 in the two sections of the rack and the pitch of the adjacent end teeth of the two rack portions being the same, there being a pinion 9 and motor 11 located outside the hatch coaming on the side of the ledge remote from the hatch opening, the pinion engaging when the hatch cover is closed with portion 13 and when the hatch cover is open with portion 19, a portion of the weather-tight joint made by ledge 4 and strip 5 lying between the adjacent end teeth of the two portions of the rack. Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown) illustrate an alternative embodiment having horizontal teeth 8.
