Abstract

1380471 Twin hatch covers N V LASKEY 17 Oct 1972 47702/72 Heading B7S [Also in Division F4] A pair of hatch covers are disposed transversely one each over twin hatch openings 12 of a common hold of ship 5, one hatch cover 13B being slidable under the other when the other cover 13A is raised to an elevated position. Each of the hatch openings has a coaming 14 above deck level and longitudinal, 16, 17, and transverse, 52, reinforcing structure surrounds each opening below deck level. The longitudinal reinforcing structure 17 under the midship longitudinal sides of the coamings is common to the adjacent midship sides 13C, 13D of the coamings. Each hatch cover has a seal to engage its coaming. High lift hydraulic jacks 23 elevate hatch cover 13A and low lift jacks 24 elevate cover 13B a sufficient distance to break the seal with its coaming so that cover 13B can be moved transversely on rails 45 to its position'under the elevated cover 13A, thus uncovering one of the twin hatch openings. The two hatch covers can also be moved together in pickaback fashion to uncover the other of the twin hatch openings. In the embodiment shown the midships longitudinal reinforcing structure 17 is a ventilating trunk with openings to the interior of each hold.
