742,860. Hatch cover stowage. GEDDES, R. C. Aug. 17, 1953 [May 20, 1952], No. 12702/52. Class 113. In a cargo ship having the bridge structure arranged amidships and a set of holds each adapted to be closed by a hatch cover, a stowage space arranged athwartship and completely clear of the deck space for reception of at least one of the hatch covers is provided under the bridge proper. In the embodiment of Fig. 1 the ship has three holds, the hatch cover sections 4 of the forward hold 1 being adapted to be stowed in the forecastle 8 and the sections 4 of the midships hold 2 and of the afterhold (not shown) being stowed under the bridge 7. Horizontal rails 18 are located in the stowage spaces for engagement by wheels 6 on both sides of each hatch cover section 4, at least one winch 13 in the stowage space being adapted to raise each section for stowage in a vertical plane. The ends of the rails 18 adjacent the respective hold slope downwardly to serve as ramps for engagement by the wheels 6.
