Abstract

158,323. Stokes, S. F. Oct. 29, 1919. Hatches.-In hatches comprising a number of overlapping transverse sections running on tracks so that they may be telescoped on one or both sides of the hatch leaving the aperture fully open, one of the sections, or a separate trolly member, is provided with wheels running on a separate deck track whereby the remaining sections when telescoped are supported by the selected member or trolly and are run 'clear of the hatch opening. The arc-shaped sections 20, 20a, 20 are stiffened by interior girders 22 and which in conjunction with inturned edges 23 secure an automatic telescopic action as the sections provided with wheels 27 working on tracks 26 secured to the coaming are moved forwards or backwards by gear such as a hand-operated pinion 32 gearing with a pinion 30 working on the rack 29. As seen in Fig. 4, the innermost section 20 is extended towards the deck and is provided with additional wheels 48 running on deck tracks 49. The adjacent part of the upper track 26 is movable and is attached to the inner section 20a, this arrangement permitting the telescoped sections supported by the member 20 to be rocked back clear of the hatchway. In a modification, Fig. 14, the section 50 serves as the trolly member, being furnished with deck wheels 48, and also a further series of wheels 51, which in turn engage with the forwardly-inclined edges of the inner sections 53. This form is further modified by providing the edges of the sections with rack bars, the inclination of which may be adjusted by screw gear. In another modification, the sections are flat and are supported on a runway mounted inside the hatch coaming. To render the hatch air and watertight, india-rubber tubes which may or may not be inflated are arranged between sides of the sections or between the abutting faces of the central sections which are secured by hinged screw bolts 35 engaging brackets 38. An ordinary hatch covering or tarpaulin may be secured over the sections.
