Abstract
147,367. Elordieta, D. V. Sept. 1, 1919. Hatches.-Hatch covers are constructed of a number of slats 1 having overlapping edges 2 fitted with packing 3. The slats 1 are carried on guides 9 secured to brackets 10 and arranged to be swung about the pivots 16 so that the slats 1 slide down one behind the other into a substantially vertical position when the hatch is open. Handwheels 15 operated at the four corners of the cover tilt the guides 9 until they reach the position shown to the left in Fig. 1. The handwheel 23 is then operated to swing the guide 9 about the trunnion 16 and as the guide 9 is swung into a vertical position the slats slide on over the other and are automatically housed at the end of the hatchway. When loading or unloading long articles such as timber, the guides 9 may be released from the slats 1 and restored to their normal position along the hatch. The wheels 23 may be simultaneously operated by power.
