Abstract
6038. Overton, C. S. March 11. Vessels, trough systems for emptying.-In the unloading of ships by conveyers arranged in troughs beneath the hold, the conveyers 41 are driven by a shaft 52 extending across the hold through the medium of vertical shafts 48 having bevel-gears at each end. The troughs are enclosed by removable covers 53 arranged to leave an aperture adjacent to the discharging-elevator. This elevator has its lower stretch 45 arranged across the hold, and its side stretches 44 converging upwards through the deck, where the casing of the upper stretch discharges into a trough 62. The casing is provided with doors in the ascending stretch hinged at the lower edges and opening outwards to facilitate the initial stages of the unloading operation. The trough 62 is provided with door's on opposite sides, either of which can be removed to accommodate an outboard conveyer 77 geared to one or the other of the upper sprockets of the elevator, according to which side of the ship the material is being delivered.
