An elevating conveyer 10 transfers potatoes 70 from a conveyer 22, which receives them from a digging blade of a harvesting machine (not shown), to an upper conveyer 30 in flexible pockets 51 sagging under gravity between adjacent brackets 48 attached to parallel chains 47. Sprockets 60 drive the chains 47, the ascending run 55 of the conveyer 10 being angled to discharge the potatoes 70 as the pockets 51 pass the sprockets 60. As the pockets 51 pass round return sprockets 45 the brackets 48 diverge so as to tighten the pockets 51 to eject any dirt, mud or other debris.
