HIRAM W. BLAISDELL, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
APPARATUS FUR HANDLING MATERIAL.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit knownthat I, HIRAM'VV. BLAIsDELL; a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles'.
and State of California, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Handling Material; and I do ereby "declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and usethe same.
This invention refers to means for handling material, and has for its object to provide an apparatus whereby material can bere'ceived from an endless belt conveyer situated at the side of a row of vats or other receptacles and uniformly distributed insaid vats by means of acentrifu al or other distributer.
A further object o the invention is to pro-- vide means whereby the cross conveyers maybe retracted to av ')i'd posts or other obstructions'situated at the side of the vats.
Anotherobject of this invention is to rovide a cover ,for the main conveyer elt above mentioned;
Still another object'of thisinvention is to provide an apparatus in which one cross c0n. veyer may be utilized to carry material from either side of the row of vats to the center of the traveling structure and there discharged.
With these, and other objects inz view, the invention consists of the construction herein described, and illustrated in the accompanying sheets of drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the main construction and Fig. 2 is a, similar view of an alternative construction. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the gearing inthe above construction.
.Referring to the draw1ngs, numeral 1 designates a tanker vat; numeral '2 is a tim her, supported at the side of a row of said vats on which timber-is mounted a rail 3, whereon are adapted to travel wheel's 4.,supporting frame 5. Transverse timbersfi rest uponthe frame 5 and have tongues or guides 7,. which en age grooves in the extensible frame 8. A red to frame 5 is a bracl et 9: having a bearing formed therein in which a. shaft 10 turns, the lower part ad acent to.
bracket 9 havingfixed thereto a pinion 11, which meshes with a rack 12, fixed to the extensible frame 8. Above the pinion '11 1 is secured a ratchet 13, which may beengaged specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 26, 1909.
Application filed September 18, 1905. Serial No. 279,043.
[by pawl 14, carried by bracket 9. The
upper end of shaft 10 is provided with a hand wheel 15. -At the outer end of frame 8 are bearings 16, wherein is journaled a shaft carrying a drum 17 Near the middle portion of timbers 6. are situated similar bearings, carrying similar drums, on the shaft of which are mounted pulleys 19, and upon the inner end of the extensible frame, and also atan intermediate point thereof, are mounted troughing idlers 20. Over drums 17 and the troughing' idlers 20, a cross conveyer belt 21 is adapted to travel, the under lead thereof being supported in the usual manner" by idlers 22. Adjacent and parallel to timbers 2 are supported, in any convenient manner, timbers 23, to which are affixed rails 24, onwhich travels a tripper 25, designed to dischar e material from the main belt 26, the upperlead of said main conveyer being'supported in the usual manner by troughing and 'plain' idlers respectively. A
shed or cover 27, being supported on posts 28, is erected over the main conveyer for the purpose of protecting it from the weather. A cover 29 supported by posts 30 is placed over cross conveyer 21. t the center portion of the length of timbers 6 is mounted a bracket 31, wherein is journaled a shaft 32' to which motion may be applied by any suitable means. The lowerend of shaft 32 carries a centrifugal distributer 33. It is to be under'stoodthat in this principal construction these elements may be duplicated at the opposite end of the traveling structure and that any number of. vats 1; or other suitable containing means, may be used.
Referring to the alternative construction iliary conveyer movable into operative relation with veitherof the main conveyers; upon timbers 6 are mounted rails 34, the endsof -which may be upwardly deflected for the illustrated in Fig. 2 which showsfa single aux- Cir mounted abracket 43, supporting shaft 44 on the upper end of which is affixed a bevel gear 45, meshing with a bevel pinion 46, on the shaft 47, on the other end of which shaft is a pulley 48, which receives power from any desirable source, and transmits it through shaft 47', pinion 46, gear 45, to shaft 44, which turns the centritugal distributer 33.
The operation of the construction shown in Fig. 1 is as follows :Material being deposited upon main conveyer belt 26, by any suitable apparatus, it is conveyed to the tripper 25, and discharged thereby onto the transverse conveyor 21, and by it, conveyed and discharged upon the centrifugal distributer 33, the latter de ositing the same uniformly in the vat 1. hen it is desired to move the apparatus from one vat to another, the extensible frame 8 is retracted through the instrumentality of the hand wheel 15 and the shaft 19, and the mechanism operated thereby, and the apparatus propelled by any suitable means to the point at which it is required to use it. The tripper 25 is also run along the rails on which it is supported and the extensible frame reextended, as will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to .whichthis invention appertains.
Referring to the operation of the alternative construction shown in Fig. 2, the motor 40 being started, the conveyer 21 is operated by the mechanism hereinbefore described. Material is deposited u on the cross conveyer 21 by a tripper, as s own and described in the main construction, or by any other suitable means, and the conveyer 21 being in motion, the material is carried by it over the drum 3?), where it is discharged onto the centrifugal distributer 33. When it is desired to move the traveling structure along a row of vats, and in order to avoid obstructions at the side thereof, the conveyer carriage 35 is moved alongrails 34, till the end thereof clears said obstructions. When it is necessary to receive material from a tripper at the other side of the traveling structure the conveyer carriage is moved along rails 34 to the other side of the centrifugal distributer, the motor is reversed and the material is carried over drum 39 and discharged onto the centrifugal distributor as hereinbefore described.
