Abstract

359,691. Rotary engines and pumps. RAMEN, T., Írebro, Sweden. Oct. 14, 1930, No. 30735. [Class 110 (ii).] In a rotary pump or engine of the rotary abutment type, in which a hollow drum 2 carrying piston blades 4 is made hollow to serve for the discharge or the supply and discharge of the working fluid, the apertures 12, 15 in the periphery of the drum through which the fluid enters and leaves the working spaces 13 are adapted to be closed, during the passage of the pistons 4 through the recesses 6 in the abutments 5, by fixed plates which are formed in two overlapping parts so as to be adjustable in length. In the form shown in Fig. 8, 11, 11a are inlet ports, while the interior of the drum 2 communicates with the discharge pipe 14. Fig. 3 shows, in section, a modification in which the hollow piston drum serves for both supply and discharge of the fluid, the drum being fitted with a central partition 8 and the spaces 9, 10 thus formed communicating respectively with the inlet port 11 and the discharge pipe 14. To ensure a tight joint between the pistons 4 and the walls of the casing 1, the former may, as shown in Fig. 8, be recessed to receive resilient packing rings 19 held in position by T-shaped ends 20, or, as shown in Fig. 3, they may be formed in two parts 17 inserted in a grooved flange which is integral with the drum 2 and is formed with a central undercut projection 16<1> to retain the parts 17 in place.
