Abstract

273,042. Berk, F. W. April 15, 1926. Driving-gear.-A supercharger for an internalcombustion engine is driven through a plate clutch held open by a spring B<2>, Fig. 2, and closed, when the action of the spring is neutralized through a Bowden transmission W, by a second spring A<1> weaker than the spring B<2>. The outer plates D of the clutch are carried on a ring fixed to a chain wheel C, which is driven by the engine. The inner plates are carried on a sleeve A, keyed to the supercharger shaft S; the spring A<1> acts directly on this sleeve and the spring B<2> through a stirrup B. The Bowden gear can be connected to the accelerator pedal when the device is used on a motor vehicle. In a modification spur gearing P, S', Fig. 5, is interposed between the sleeve A<x> carrying the inner plates and one of the shafts R<2> of a Roots blower. The spring A<1> again acts directly on the sleeve Ax but the spring B<2> acts through a lever B<x> spindle A<2> and cross piece A<3>.
