Abstract

251,514. Blume, E. Oct. 1, 1925. Blast apparatus.-The blast pipe of a locomotive is provided with a nozzle having concentric passages and a valve adapted to reciprocate so as to control the passage of exhaust steam through one of the passages directly to the atmosphere and through the other passage to the chimney to vary the draught. As shown in Fig. 1, the exhaust pipes a, a' lead into a housing b having a central passage f communicating with an outlet pipe g and concentric orifices e communicating with the chimney. In the raised position of the valve h, as shown, the exhaust steam passes through the ports l to the pipe g, the orifices e being closed by the flange i. By lowering the valve the steam may be led through the orifices e to the chimney or to both the chimney and the pipe g. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, steam passes from the annular passage o around the nozzle c to the escape pipe g when the valve h is lowered and to the centre nozzle when it is raised.
