Abstract

228,261. Blackstone, G. M., Carter, F., and Carter, E. Oct. 31, 1923. Lever and spring actuated pumps; buffers, springs, and the like.-Fuel for injection into the cylinders of an internal-combustion engne is supplied by a pump in measured quantities through a non-return valve d<1> to a chamber x, communicating with the fuel injector chamber c<4> and forming the pressure chamber of the fuel injection pump. The injection pump d<3> is in contact with a second plunger e provided with a cap e<4> slidable thereon, a spring e<1> being held between the head e' of the plunger e and the cap e<4>. As the fuel is supplied to the chamber x, both plungers d<3> and e, together with the cap e<4>, are moved outwards from left to right. Immediately preceding the injection a roller f<1> on the cam-shaft actuated lever f engaging the cap e<4>, and since the plungers e and d<3> are unable to yield owing to the fuel in the chamber x, compresses the spring e<1>, until a projection h on the lever f engages an adjustable tapped h<1>. When this occurs, the arm of a bell crank lever h<3> is moved out of contact with the outer end of the fuel injection valve c, thus removing from the valve the pressure of a supplementary spring h<2>. The pressure of the fuel in the chamber c<4> is then sufficient to open the injection valve c against the pressure of another spring (not shown), and injection takes place, the plungers e and d' moving from right to left under the influence of the spring e<1> at a speed independent of that of the engine. A buffer spring e<5> checks the outward movement of the plunger, and a valve i permits the escape of imprisoned air at starting, are provided. Specification 229,966 is referred to.
