Abstract

229,966. Blackstone, G. M., Carter, F., and Carter, E. Oct. 31, 1923. Spring throzv actuated pumps. - Fuel is supplied by a pump in measured quantities through a non-return valve d<1> to a chamber d in communication with a chamber c<4> surrounding the injection valve c and with the pressure chamber of a pump plunger d This plunger is in contact with a second plunger e, having a sliding cap e<4> between which and the head x of the plunger e is a spring e<1>. During the supply of fuel to the chamber d, both plungers together with the cap a<4> are moved outwards from left to right. Immediately previous to injection a roller #<1> on a camshaft-actuated lever f contacts with the cap e<4>, and since the plungers e and d<3> are unable to move owing to the presence of fuel in the chamber d, compresses the spring e<1> until a projection h on the lever f engages an adjustable, tappet h<1>. When this occurs the arm of a bell crank lever h<3> is moved out of contact with the outer end of the fuel injector valve c, thus removing from the valve the pressure of the spring h<2>. The pressure of the fuel in the chamber c<4> is then sufficient to open the injection valve' c against the pressure of another spring (not shown) and injection takes place, the plungers e and d<3> moving from right to left under the influence of the spring e<1> at a speed independent of that of the engine. A buffer spring e<5> to check the outward movement of the plunger, and a valves i to permit the escape of imprisoned air at starting, are provided. Compressed air or other gaseous fluid may be used in place of the spring e<1>, the fluid being repeatedly compressed and allowed to expand. Specification 228,261 is referred to.
