Abstract

187,387. Peabody, E. H. Aug. 17, 1921. Nozzles for producing whirling sprays.-Liquid fuel is fed under pressure to an injector in which it receives a rotary or whirling motion, and the whole or a regulable proportion of the whirling fuel is discharged into the combustion chamber. The injector, Fig. 1, comprises concentric pipes 1, 2 screwing in a head-piece 28 in which are formed chambers 30, 33 communicating with fuel inlet and outlet passages 31, 35 respectively. The end of the pipe 1 is reduced in diameter and formed with a bevelled seat 7 again which abuts a plug 8 having a circular body portion and formed with an integral sleeve 11 fitting over the end of the pipe 2. The plug 8 and a tip 14 are secured in position by a cap 5 screwing on the reduced end of the pipe 1. The liquid fuel passes under pressure from the chamber 30 through the annular space between the pipes 1, 2, through a series of passages 13 in the plug 8 into an annular channel 18 in the tip 14. The channel 18 communicates with a conical chamber 15 through tangential passages 17 which impart to the fuel an increased velocity and a whirling motion. The fuel delivered to the chamber 15 may all be discharged through a spraying orifice 16 or a proportion may be bye-passed through a series of passages 12 in the plug 8 and the pipe 2 to chambers 33 from which it returns to the fuelcirculating system. Specification 113,065, [Class 7 (ii), Internal-combustion engines, Arrangement &c. of] is referred to.
