1,149,818. Inspecting effectiveness of seals. ARMSTRONG CORK CO. Oct. 31, 1967, No.49520/67. Heading G1S. In apparatus for inspecting sealing members such as closures, there is provided an article receiving chuck 25, 26, an inspection assembly 42 arranged to engage a sealing member when positioned in the chuck 25, 26, a valveless vacuum passage 53 extending through the assembly from a vacuum source 58 to an orifice 54 in the inspection ring 59, and a spring-loaded reciprocable sleeve 49 arranged to strip the article from the inspection assembly when the pressure differential fails to reach a predetermined value. As shown in Figs.2 and 9, a closure 62 having a sealing ring 63 is mounted in the chuck cavity 26, chuck 25 being reciprocable in guide member 22 towards and away from the inspection assembly 42. In operation, the closure member 61 is transferred into sealing engagement with the inspection head, so as to be connected to the vacuum source through orifice 54. If the seal is adequate, then retention force balances the stripping force of spring 52 acting on sleeve 49. If the seal is defective, sleeve 49 strips the closure from the inspection head on removal of chuck 25.
