Abstract

548,240. Stoppers for containers. GLOCKER, G. April 1, 1942, No. 4371. [Class 125 (iii)] A container has a body 10 with 'a shoulder 14 and an inclined wall 12 at its mouth. The stopper 16 has a depending member 24 between which and the rim is formed an annular groove 18. The sealing member 20, consisting of a ring of resilient material, rests in the groove 18 with one face resting on the member 24. When the stopper just rests in position as shown in Fig. 6 the edge 28 of the sealing member makes a line contact with the shoulder 14, and the outer face 30 of the sealing ring is spaced from the inclined wall 12. When the container is heated during the sealing operation, the stopper is lifted to permit gas to escape, and as the container cools atmospheric pressure forces the stopper down until the sealing ring is in contact with the shoulder 14 and wall 12 as shown in Fig. 7. The form of the slot 18 and the crosssection of the sealing ring may be varied.
