Abstract
1,003,293. Pulverulent fuel furnaces. FOSTER WHEELER Ltd. July 17, 1962 [July 19, 1961], No. 27412/62. Heading F4B. In a pulverulent fuel fired slag tap furnace, the burner or burners are directed against a wall of zig-zag or undulating cross-section providing vertical troughs down which the molten slag runs. In a water tube steam generator, Figs. 1 and 2, divided into two combustion chambers 12, 14 by a zig-zag wall formed of tubes 15 encased in refractory material 24, burners 11 in each combustion chamber deliver towards the vertical troughs formed in the wall, which is maintained below the fusion temperature of the ash. A coating of slag builds up until the temperature of the outer surface rises sufficiently to allow molten slag to run down the troughs to outlet openings 26 at the bottom of the combustion chambers. The steam generator has a reheater 16 secreened by the upper ends of the tubes 15, superheaters 18, 20 and an economizer 22. Fly ash carried over is collected in a hopper 32 and returned to the combustion chamber. The burners may be directed towards the apices of the zig-zag wall. In a steam generator furnace having a single combustion chamber, Figs. 5 and 6, not shown, the rear wall has vertical troughs only opposite the burners. In a cylindrical furnace, Fig. 8, the burners 11 deliver against the troughs of a central star-section baffle.
