Casings and walls; crowns and roofs.-In a powdered or oil fuel furnace, the air supplied to the burners D, Fig. 1, or to a stream of fuel and air passing to the burners, is heated in one or more headers E arranged between watertubes B, as shown in Fig, 2, and provided with ribs E<1> on the wall exposed to the radiant heat of the combustion chamber. The headers are connected at their lower ends to an air supply chamber F and at their upper ends are provided with delivery nozzles G. The lower portions of the headers may be provided with projections H for supporting brickwork I to protect the headers. The ribs E<1> may be constructed to impart a whirling motion to the air. In the modification shown in Fig. 5, the headers E are located a considerable distance below the burners and the air is led through a space K between the outer casing A and brickwork L surrounding the water-tubes B to delivery openings G. Fig. 3 shows the headers arranged in the furnace arch with outlets G adjacent the burner D.
