Description
Die Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren zur Alkoholyse oder Phenolyse von Phosphorpentasulfid.
Phosphorpentasulfid ist ein Ausgangsmaterial, das in
großem Umfange für die Herstellung von O,O-DiaIkyl-
oder ΰ,Ο-Diaryldithiophosphorsäuren verwendet wird. Diese Säuren finden zahlreiche Anwendungen beispielsweise
für die Herstellung von oxydationsverhülenden Zusatzmitteln (»Dopes«) und Korrosionsschutzniitteln
für Motorenöle, als Flotationsmittel für Erze oder als Zwischenprodukte für die Synthese von phosphorhaltigen
Insektiziden.
Die Alkoholyse und die Phenolyse von Phosphorpenlasulfid
können allgemein durch das folgende ungefähre Schema dargestellt werden:

Wie zahlreiche Autoren gezeigt haben (K. Moedritzer und J. R. van Wazer, J. Inorg. Nucl. Chem., 1963, 25,
Seiten 683 bis 690; A. E. Lippman, J. Org. Chem., 1966,31,
Seiten 471 bis 473, und L. Nebbia und V. Bellotti, La Chimica e l'lndustria, 1970, 52 [4], Seiten 369-371), ist
das Hauptprodükt (RO)2P(S)SH selbst bei Verwendung von gereinigtem Phosphorpentasulfid immer von
geringen Mengen anderer Thiophosphorsäureester begleitet:

Außerdem ist sehr häufig die Abtrennung einer geringen Schwefelmenge insbesondere bei handelsüblichen
Phosphorpentasulfiden festzustellen, auch wenn die Elementaranalyse der letzteren nicht die Anwesenheit
von Schwefel im Überschuß über die stöohiometrisehe Menge erkennen läßt
Die Geschwindigkeit, mit der ein Alkohol oder ein Phenol unter bestimmten Bedingungen mit Phosphorpentasulfid
reagiert, unterliegt Schwankungen in einem ziemlich weiten Bereich in Abhängigkeit vom Ursprung
ίο des Phosphorpentasulfids. Diese Geschwindigkeit ist
auf Grund ihres Einflusses auf die Produktivität der Anlagen, in denen Dialkyl- und Diaryldithiophosphorsäure
hergestellt wird, von großer technischer Bedeutung. Man kennzeichnet sie im allgemeinen durch einen
»Reaktionsfähigkeitsindex«, den man mit Hilfe eines kalorimetrischen Alkoholysentests ermittelt, bei dem im
allgemeinen Isopropanol als Alkohol verwendet wird. Der ermittelte Wert variiert verhältnismäßig wenig mit
der Rührgeschwindigkeit und mit der Feinheit des P2Ss-Pulvers, sondern hängt weitgehend von der
Kristallstruktur des Phosphorsulfids ab.
Gemäß P. Bencze (Revue de l'Institut Frangais du
Petrole, 1970, XXV, Nr. 5, Seiten 647 bis 676), erfolgt die
Alkoholyse von Phosphorpentasulfid nach dem folgenden Prozeß:
1) schnelle Auflösung des P2S5 im Alkohol,
2) langsamere chemische Reaktion des gelösten P2S5
mit dem Alkohol.
Da die erste Stufe sehr schnell verläuft, trägt sie praktisch dazu bei, die Flüssigkeit mit P2Ss gesättigt zu
halten. Die Gesamtgeschwindigkeit der durch die langsame Stufe (2) beherrschten Reaktion kann durch
die folgende Gleichung dargestellt werden:

wesentlichen konstante) Konzentration an gelöstem P2S^. Für eine besondere Probe von P2S5 wurde von
Bencze der Wert von [P2Si] in Isobutanol bei 40°C mit
0,15% ermittelt.
Die Röntgenuntersuchung von handelsüblichen Phosphorpentasulfiden zeigt, daß sie im allgemeinen aus
einem Gemisch einer »anomalen« (amorphen oder mikrokristallinen) Phase und einer gut kristallisierten
normalen Phase bestehen. Die erste metastabile Phase ist außerdem in Lösungsmitteln löslicher als die zweite
Phase. Gemäß der Beziehung (2) reagiert sie somit schneller mit Alkoholen als die kristalline Phase. Die
Reaktionsfähigkeit einer Probe von Phosphorpentasulfid ist somit direkt proportional ihrem Gehalt an
anomaler Phase.
Diese anomale Phase, deren Struktur noch nicht geklärt worden ist (zweifellos polymer) ist vielleicht identisch mit der sehr reaktionsfähigen Verbindung, die von H. Vincent (Dissertation, vorgelegt am 19.2. 1969 der Fakultät der Wissenschaften der Universität Lyon) durch Vakuum-Sublimation von auf 200 bis 2200C
Diese anomale Phase, deren Struktur noch nicht geklärt worden ist (zweifellos polymer) ist vielleicht identisch mit der sehr reaktionsfähigen Verbindung, die von H. Vincent (Dissertation, vorgelegt am 19.2. 1969 der Fakultät der Wissenschaften der Universität Lyon) durch Vakuum-Sublimation von auf 200 bis 2200C
b5 erhitztem P2O5 mit Kondensation der Dämpfe an einer
mit flüssiger Luft gekühlten Wand isoliert wurde.
Es ist ferner bekannt, daß die handelsüblichen Phosphorpentasulfide, die einer schlagartigen Abküh-
lung oder »Abschreckung« aus dem geschmolzenen Zustand unterworfen worden sind, einen höheren Anteil
der anomalen Phase enthalten und reaktionsfähiger sind als die Phosphorpentasulfide, die langsamer gekühlt
worden sind (siehe beispielsweise K. Moedritzer und J. R. van Wazer, loc. cit).
In der US-Patentschrift 30 23 086 wird festgestellt, daß die zum Durchlaufen des Bereichs von 280 bis
2600C festgelegte Zeit (reines P2S5 schmilzt bei 2880C)
bestimmend ist Beispielsweise steigt die Reaktionsfähigkeit wie 1:10, wenn diese Zeit von 2,5 Minuten auf
0,125 Sekunden verkürzt wird.
Die technische Durchführung einer solchen schlagartigen Abkühlung wirft jedoch sehr große technische
Probleme auf. Die US-Patentschrift 32 82 653 beschreibt beispielsweise eine mit einem Transportband
arbeitende Vorrichtung mit drei Tempera»urstufen, die es ermöglicht, Phosphorpentasulfid stufenweise von 400
auf 2500C zu kühlen. Die Erstellung einer solchen Vorrichtung ist sehr schwierig. Weitere Vorrichtungen
wurden vorgeschlagen und mit mehr oder weniger Erfolg ausprobiert
Ein weiterer Nachteil der Abschreckungstechnik liegt in der metastabilen Natur des erhaltenen Pentasulfids,
dessen Reaktionsfähigkeit während der Lagerung oder bei Berührung mit Lösungsmitteldämpfen oder auch
unter dem Einfluß einer Temperaturerhöhung geringer wird.
Diese Arbeitsweise zwingt außerdem den Verbraucher von Phosphorpentasulfid, der in Abhängigkeit vom
verwendeten Alkohol oder Phenol einmal eine hohe Reaktionsfähigkeit umd zum anderen eine geringere
Reaktionsfähigkeit benötigt, wenigstens zwei verschiedene Typen von P„>S5 vorrätig zu halten.
Eine weitere Methode, bei der die vorstehend genannten Nachteile vermieden werden, besteht in der
Steigerung der Reaktionsgeschwindigkeit des Phosphorpentasulfids durch Verwendung von Katalysatoren.
Während der Abschreckprozeß die Gesamtgeschwindigkeit der Reaktion (2) durch Einwirkung auf das Glied
[P2S5] steigert, läßt der katalytische Prozeß das letztere
offensichtlich unverändert, sondern wirkt auf die Geschwindigkeit der Reaktion des gelösten P2S5 ein,
d. h. er erhöht den Wert der Konstante k. Bisher wurden jedoch nur wenige und wenig wirksame Katalysatoren
vorgeschlagen, abgesehen davon, daß sie in übermäßig großen Mengen verwendet werden.
Die britische Patentschrift 12 28 528 beansprucht beispielsweise die Verwendung von Ammoniakspuren
zur Katalysierung der Reaktion von P2S5 mit Alkoholen
oder Phenolen. Gemäß P. Bencze (loc. cit.) wird Kaliumphenolat in einer Menge von 0,3 Mol-% zur
Aktivierung der Phenolyse von Phosphorpentasulfid verwendet.
N. I. Zemlyanskii und L. V. Glushkova (Zhurnal obshchei Khimii, 1967, 37, Nr. 4, Seiten 775 bis 777)
setzen P2S5 mit 2,4-Dichlorphenol und mit 2,4,6-Tri·
chlorphenol in Gegenwart einer großen Menge Triäthylamin (2 Mol pro Mol P2S5) um.
N. I. Zemlyanskii und I. V. Murav'ev (Doklady
Akademii Nauk SSSR, 1965, 163 [3], Seiten 654 und 655) verwenden ebenfalls große Mengen Triäthylamin oder
Kaliumhydroxyd für die Katalysierung der Reaktion von P2S5 mit Alkoholen vom Methylalkohol bis zum
Hexylalkohol, mit Phenol und p-Nitrophenol.
Kalashnikov, V. P. (Zhurnal. Obshchei Khimii, 1970,40 [9], 1954-6) setzen in der vorstehend beschriebenen
.Weise Phosphorpentasulfid mit Brenzkatechin in Gegenwart einer stöchiometrischen Menge von Triäthylamin
um. Schließlieh beschreiben M. G. Imaev, I. V. Tikunova und I. S. Akhmetzhanov (russische Patentschrift
2 85 146) die Umsetzung von P2S5 mit einem
C4—C9-Alkohol in Gegenwart von AzobisisobutyronitriL
D;e vorliegende Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren zur
Alkoholyse oder Phenolyse von Phosphorpentasulfid in Gegenwart stickstoffhaltiger Katalysatoren, dadurch
gekennzeichnet, daß man die Reaktion in Gegenwart wenigstens eines der folgenden Katalysatoren durchführt:
Carbonsäureamide oder Thiocarbonsäureamide, Harnstoffe, Thioharnstoffe außer N,N'-Dibutylthioharnstoff,
Isoharnstoffe, Isothioharnstoffe oder deren Salze, Oxime und Hydrocamsäuren, Hydrazin, Amide von
phosphoriger Säure, Pyridinbassn, Pyrazolderivate oder Pyrazolinderivate, 1,2,3-Triazolderivate oder 1,2,4-Triazolderivate,
Azide, Oxazol- oder Oxazolinderivate, Imidazol- oder Imidazoiinderivate, Guanidin- oder
Cyanamidderivate, Stickstoffoxide oder Nitrite, Nitrolsäuren oder Pseudonitrole, Cyanate, Isocyanate oder
Thiocyanate.
Die im erfindungsgemäßen Verfahren verwendeten Katalysatoren haben gegenüber den bekannten Katalysatoren
den Vorteil, daß sie allgemein in geringer Menge wesentlich wirksamer sind.
In Fällen, in denen die in Frage kommende Verbindung mehrere mesomere oder tautomere Struktüren
hat, kann wenigstens eine von ihnen durch die im folgenden genannten Bezeichnungen dargestellt werden.
Die Erfindung umfaßt ferner Kombinationen von mehreren Katalysatoren der vorstehend beschriebenen
Art sowie ihre Salze mit organischen oder anorganischen Säuren oder Basen.
Als Beispiele von Katalysatoren seien genannt:

Glykoluril, Urethane und Ammoniumcarbamat.
2) Amide von Thiocarbonsäuren, z. B. Thioacetamid, Thiobenzamid, Ν,Ν-Dimethylthioformamid, Thioharnstoffe,
außer N.N'-Dibutylthioharnstoff, wie Thioharnstoff, N-Methylthioharnstoff, N-Äthylthioharnstoff,
symmetrischer Dibutylthioharnstoff und Äthylenthioharnstoff.
3) Verbindungen, die die Gruppe N-O enthalten, z. B. Hydroxylamin, Methylhydroxylamine, Oxaziridine,
Aldoxime, Ketoxime, Chinonoxime, Hydroxamsäuren, Amidoxime, O-substituierte Oxime,
Nitrolsäuren, Isoxazol und seine Derivate und Isonitrosomalonylguanidin.
4) Verbindungen, die die Bindung N-N enthalten, z. B. Hydrazin, Methylhydrazin, N,N-Dimethylhydrazin,
Phenylhydrazin, Aminoguanidin, Semicarbazid. Hydrazone, Azine, Pyrazol-, Indazol- und
bo Pyrazolinderivate, Nitrosamine, Benzolriazol,
4-Amino-l,2,4-triazol, 4-Aminoantipyridin und Stickstoffwasserstoffsäure und ihre Derivate.
5) Verbindungen, die die Bindung N-P enthalten, z. B. Amide von phosphoriger Säure, Phosphorsäu-
reundThiophosphorsäure.

Der Katalysator kann in einer Menge von 0,01 bis 10 Gew.-% des eingesetzten Alkohols oder Phenols
verwendet werden. Bevorzugt wird jedoch eine Menge zwischen 0,1 und 2%,
Der Katalysator kann in verschiedener Weise eingesetzt werden. Er kann vorher in der gesamten
Menge oder einem Teil des in die Reaktion eingesetzten Alkohols oder Phenols gelöst oder dispergiert werden.
Er kann ferner, vor allem wenn er ein Feststoff ist, mit dem pulverförmigen P2S5 gemischt werden. Er kann
dem Gemisch von P2Ss und Alkohol oder Phenol auf
einmal oder in Portionen zugesetzt werden. Er kann in reiner Form oder als Lösung in einem geeigneten
Lösungsmittel verwendet werden. In gewissen Fällen kann er auch in situ gebildet werden. Beispielsweise
ROH + R'— N=C O - R'NH—C—OR(3)
Es geschieht auch, daß die Wirkung des Katalysators sich erst nach einer »Induktionsperiode« von mehreren
Minuten zeigt In dieser Induktionsperiode verhält er sich zunächst wie ein Inhibitor (s. Beispiel 152).
Die Erfindung wird durch die folgenden Beispiele 1 bis 143 ausführlicher beschrieben. In diesen Beispielen
wurde die Aktivität des Katalysators mit Hilfe des folgenden vereinfachten Tests ermittelt:
Die abgemessene Katalysatormenge (in den meisten Fällen 0,5 g, wenn der Katalysator fest ist, oder 0,5 ml,
wenn er flüssig ist) wird in 100 + 0,1 g des gewählten Alkohols oder Phenols in einem 250-ml-Becherglas
gelöst, das mit einem Glasdeckel versehen ist, der für die Einführung eines Thermometers mit Vio-Gradeinteilung
mit einer Bohrung versehen und wärmeisoliert ist. Während der Inhalt des Becherglases mit einem
Magnetrührer gerührt wird und die Temperatur der Flüssigkeit sich bei Raumtemperatur (etwa 220C) oder
im Falle von Cyclohexanol und tert-Butanol leicht oberhalb der Schmelztemperatur des Alkohols befindet,
werden auf einmal 10 ±0,01 g P2S5 in Pulverform zugesetzt. Jede Minute wird die Temperatur notiert.
Nach 15 Minuten wird eine neue Katalysatormenge zugesetzt. Der evtl. Temperaturanstieg A1U der sogleich
nach dieser zweiten Zugabe eintritt und im allgemeinen auf die Neutralisationswärme des Katalysators (wenn er
basisch ist) durch die Säure (RO)2PS2H zurückzuführen
ist, wird gemessen.
Die Reaktionsgeschwindigkeit wird empirisch durch
«to den nach 7 Minuten (oder ausnahmsweise nach 15 Minuten) gemessenen Wert von At ermittelt, wobei die
Korrektur für die im vorstehenden Absatz definierte Neutralisationswärme A't abgezogen wird. In jedem
Fall wird sie mit dem Wert Au der bei einer
A5 Vergleichsprobe ohne Katalysator ermittelt wird,
verglichen.
Es ist zu bemerken, daß auf Grund unvermeidlicher Wärmeverluste dieser vereinfachte Test die wirksamsten
Katalysatoren zu benachteiligen pflegt.
Alle Versuche wurden mit Phosphorpentasulfid aus drei verschiedenen Chargen durchgeführt. Diese Proben
sind als L, T und C bezeichnet, wobei die ersten beiden aus der letzten Fabrikation stammten und die
letzte drei Jahre gelagert worden war. Die drei Proben hatten die folgende Korngrößenverteilung:

Bei den in den folgenden Beispielen beschriebenen Versuchen wird ein vierter Typ von Phosphorpentasulfid,
als »D« bezeichnet, aus der neuesten Produktion verwendet Dieses Produkt hat die folgende Korngrößenverteilung:

Die Versuche werden wie folgt durchgeführt: Als Apparatur dient ein Dreihals-Schliffkolben mit flachem
Boden »A«, der in ein bei 40 ±0,2° C gehaltenes Bad getaucht ist. In den Kolben werden 10±0,05 g P2S5 (45
Mol) und ein Magnetstab eingeführt. In einen der drei Stutzen wird ein Rohr zur Zuführung von trockenem
Stickstoff, in den anderen Stutzen ein Rückflußkühler, dem Sole bei — 100C zugeführt wird, eingesetzt, und in
den dritten Stutzen wird schnell ein Gemisch von 7,9 ml Methanol (Überschuß von 10% über die gemäß
Gleichung (1) erforderliche theoretische Menge) und 15 ml Dichloräthan eingeführt. Wenn der Katalysator
ein Feststoff ist, wird er in den Dreihalskolben mit dem Phosphorpentasulfid eingeführt. Wenn er flüssig ist,
wird er im Methanol-Dichloräthan-Gemisch gelöst.
Unmittelbar nach der Einführung sämtlicher Reaktionsteilnehmer wird der dritte Stutzen des Dreihalskolbens
mit einem Schliffstopfen verschlossen, worauf mit der Umwälzung von Stickstoff (dessen Menge auf
200 ml/Minute eingestellt wird) begonnen und der Magnetrührer eingeschaltet wird.
Die aus dem Kühler austretenden Gase strömen durch einen Sicherheitskolben und werden dann in einer
Waschflasche »F« absorbiert, die 250 ml wäßriges 0,5 N
Natriumhydroxyd enthält. Alle 15 Minuten wird aus der Waschflasche ein aliquoter Teil von 5 ml entnommen, in
dem die Sulfide durch Jodometrie bestimmt werden. Der Versuch dauert normalerweise 1 Stunde, wird
jedoch früher abgebrochen, wenn die Auflösung des
Pentasulfids vor dem Ablauf dieser Zeit eintritt Die
erhaltenen Ergebnisse sind nachstehend in Tabelle XVI genannt.

*) Bei den meisten Versuchen wird am Schluß der Reaktion eine über der theoretischen Menge liegende H2S-Menge erhalten. Dies ist
dadurch bedingt, daß, wie bereits erwähnt, die Gleichung (I) nur angenähert ist.
**) Die im H2S-Absorber enthaltene Lösung hat sich während der ersten Minuten gelb gefärbt. Dies ist zweifellos auf die Bildung von
Natriumpolysulfiden auf Grund der Oxydation von H2S durch die Stickstoffoxyde zurückzuführen. Aus dem gleichen Grund ist die
analytisch gefundene H2S-Menge hier kleiner als die theoretische Menge.

Claims (3)
1. Verfahren zur Alkoholyse oder Phenolyse von
Phosphorpentasulfid in Gegenwart stickstoffhaltiger
Katalysatoren, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man die Reaktion in Gegenwart
wenigstens eines der folgenden Katalysatoren durchführt:
Carbonsäureamide oder Thiocarbonsäureamide, Harnstoffe, Thioharnstoffe außer N,N'-Dibutylthioharnstoff,
Isoharnstoffe, Isothioharnstoffe oder deren Salze, Oxime und Hydroxamsäuren, Hydrazin,
Amide von phosphoriger Säure, Pyridinbasen, Pyrazolderivate oder Pyrazolinderivate, 1,2,3-Triazolderivate
oder 1,2,4-Triazolderivate, Azide, Oxazol-
oder Oxazolinderivate, Imidazol- oder Imidazolinderivate, Guanidin- oder Cyanamidderivate,
Stickstoffoxide oder Nitrite, Nitrolsäuren oder Pseudonitrile, Cyanate, Isocyanate oder Thiocyanate.
2. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß der Katalysator in einer Menge von
0,01 bis 10 Gew.-%, vorzugsweise 0,1 bis 2 Gew.-% des Alkohols oder Phenols verwendet wird.
3. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1 und 2, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß der Katalysator in situ gebildet
wird.
