Verfahren zur Herstellung optischer Kieselsäuregläser
Die Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren zum Herstellen von
wasser- und blasenfreiem Kieselsäureglas optischer Qualität durch Niederschlagen von kieselsäurehaltigem Russ auf
einem Dorn.

Optisches Glas aus erschmolzener Kieselsäure, das durch Niederschlagen
von SiOp-Russ nach dem Nordberg-Verfahren (USA Patent 2,326,059) hergestellt wird, eignet sich seiner optischen
Qualität wegen zur Fertigung von optischen Linsen, Prismen, Filtern und insbesondere auch optischen Wellenleitern
mit niedriger Dämpfung. Diese Gläser besitzen bereits

grosse Reinheit und sind auch schon bis zu einem gewissen
Grade "wasserfrei (ßn-a ^Q, 02), enthalten aber noch kleinere
Schlieren, Glasblasen oder Einschlüsse ungesinterter Bussteilchen und sind auch hinsichtlich des Hydroxylgehalts, der
Dämpfung, Absorption und Streuung bei schärferen Anforderungen,
z. B. für Wellenleiter, noch verbesserungsbedürftig. Auch können wegen der starken Schrumpfung nur kleinere Gegenstände,
z. B. kleine Tiegel* (Aussendurchmesser 5 cm, Höhe 5 cm, Wandstärke 2mm) hergestellt werden; oft reissen sie
schon beim Niederschlagen der Rußschicht auf dem Dorn durch
ungleiche Abkühlung oder beim Sintern. Bei der Übertragung der Rußschicht auf einen anderen Dorn zum Sintern besteht die
Gefahr der Verunreinigung und Beschädigung,
Aufgabe der Erfindung ist die Herstellung von Kieselsäuregläsern durch Niederschlagen von Kieselsäureruss mit verbesserter
optischer Qualität, auch in grösseren Abmessungen, zur Verwendung als optische Wellenleiter und andere optische Teile.
Die Aufgabe wird erfindungsgemäss dadurch gelöst, dass eine.
Siliziumverbindung durch Flammhydrolyse als Russ auf einem nichtmetallischen Dorn zur Bildung einer Rohform niedergeschlagen
wird, wobei der Brenner für die Flammhydrolyse so dicht am Dorn angeordnet wird, dass sich der Dorn im äusseren

Flammkegel befindet und der Dorn rotiert und vor- oder rückwärts
verschoben wird, und nach Niederschlagung einer dichten, gleichmässigen Rußschicht die Rußschicht mit solcher
Geschwindigkeit in einen Sinterofen eingeführt wird, dass
eingeschlossene Gase durch nicht in der heissen Ofenzone befindliche Teile der Rußschicht entweichen, während die Rußschicht
schrumpft und sintert.
Günstige Ausgestaltungen des Verfahrens ergeben sich aus der Beschreibung und den Unteransprüchen.
Die Figur 1 zeigt schematisch die Niederschlagung von Russ auf einen Dorn durch Flammhydrolysei
die Figur 2 zeigt schematisch die anschliessende Sinterung
des Eohformlings;
die Figur 3 zeigt eine Mikrophotographie des hergestellten
Glasformlings ausgezeichneter optischer Qualität, im Vergleich zu einem bekannten Formling mit zahlreichen Fehlern in der
Figur 4; -
die Figur 5 zeigt schematisch eine zur Durchführung des Verfahrens
geeignete Vorrichtung für die Flammhydrolyse mit oder ohne Dotierung.

Die Figur 1 zeigt den Dorn 10 mit einer schmalen, zylindrischen
Verlängerung 11. Der Dorn wird in der Pfeilrichtung 12 rotiert und in Pfeilrichtung 13 "bewegt, so dass der vom Brenner 14· durch Flammhydrolyse erzeugte Russ als Schicht 15 auf
der Dornverlängerung 11 niedergeschlagen wird. Der Dorn besteht z. B. aus Graphit grosser Reinheit, d. h. günstigerweise
mit einem maximalen Aschegehalt von 0,1%, da bei höherem Aschegehalt Gase ausgetrieben und Hetalloxid-Yerunreinigungen
in das Glas gelangen. Der Dorn kann auch aus Quarz, Corning Kieselsäureglas mit 98% SiOp und höher oder einer; dichten,
■feuerfesten, kristallinen Keramik wie Al0O-,, Mullit, BK", SiG
und dergleichen bestehen. Der z. B. durch Flammhydrolyse von Siliziumtetrachlorid niedergeschlagene Russ kann auch dotiert
werden, z. B. mit Zink, Zinn, Germanium, Phosphor, Tantal, Titanium, Aluminium, Wolfram, Molybdän, Beryllium, Niobium,
u. a. m. Der Brenner 14- wird dicht am Dorn angeordnet, meist
nur im Abstand von 10 - 18 cm (s. den Pfeil 18), und liefert
eine intensive Flamme 19, z. B. 0,5 cfm Naturgas, 0,58 cfm Sauerstoff. Nach Einschalten des Brenners wird der Dorn rotiert
und in Pfeilrichtung 13 so bewegt, dass eine gleichmässige
Beschichtung 15 grosser Dichte, z. B. von 2,54- cm Dicke
oder mehr, entsteht. Infolge der Dornbewegung, des geringen Abstands vom Brenner und des Dornmaterials ist die Schicht so
dicht, kompakt und gleichmässig, dass sie weder reisst noch abblättert. Erfindungsg.emäss reicht der Dorn in den äusseren

Flammkegel selbst hinein. Infolge der grossen Dichte schrumpft
die Kußschicht "beim anschliessenden Sintern nur um etwa 30%*
im'Gegensatz zu "bisher üblicher Schrumpfung von 50 - 60%.
Zum Sintern wird der Rohformling 15 in einen z. B. induktiv
auf 1400 - 1700° erhitzten Ofen ζ. B. in Pfeilrichtung 21 von oben oder auch in anderer Richtung eingeführt. Diese Einführung
muss verhältnismässig langsam vorgenommen werden, nämlich z. B. je nachxder Schichtdicke mit Geschwindigkeiten von
0,25^ - 2,54 cm/Min. Zur Ausschaltung einer Oxidation des
Graphitdorns ist die Ofenatmosphäre träge und besteht z. B. aus Helium, Stickstoff und dergleichen. Beim Sintern schrumpft
der Rohformling etwas und es entsteht der feste, klare Glaskörper 23· Die Sinterung schreitet bei der langsamen Einführung
des Rohformlings in den Ofen vom einen bis zum anderen Ende
fort, wobei eingeschlossene Gase 24 jeweils aus dem ungesinterten
Abschnitt 25 herausgedrückt werden. Fach vollständiger Sinterung wird der Körper rasch aus dem Ofen genommen. Er ist
frei von Gasen oder anderen Einschlüssen, wie ein Vergleich der Photographie der Fig. 3 mit dem Produkt bekannter Verfahren
der Figur 4- mit zahlreichen Gasblasen und Einschlüssen
zeigt. Auch ist der Tiegel der Fig. 4 z. B, nur 1,5 nun dick,
während erfindungsgemäss hergestellte Tiegel 18 mm und dicker sein können.

Da günstigerweise der gleiche Dorn für die erste Fiederschlagung
der Rußschicht und als Träger beim Sintern verwendet
wird, "behält der Formling beim Sintern, seine inneren Abmessungen;
lediglich die Wandstärke schrumpft und auch diese nur um 30%. Die Verwendung des gleichen Doms macht eine Übertragung
auf einen anderen Träger unnötig und schaltet Verunreinigungen bei der Handhabung aus. Auf diese Weise sind die
verschiedensten Formen und Abmessungen herstellbar, so z. B. Rohre für Wellenleiter mit 2,54- cm Aussendurchmesser und 6,35
mm lichter Weite, dotiert oder undotiert, oder zylindrische und quadratische Rohre 2,54- cm im Durchmesser, 10 cm lang,
6,35 mm dick mit verschiedenen Oxiden dotiert wie GeOp, SnOp,
WO,, MoO.,, TapOc. Alle Produkte haben ausgezeichnete optische
Qualität, sind sehr rein und wasserfrei (ß>n>a = 0,01) und
sind mannigfaltig·verwendbar, z. B. als Linsen, Prismen, Filter,
Hochtemperaturlampenmäntel, Rohre, Wellenleiter usw. oder als Tiegel, z. B. mit der Abmessung 11 cm Aussendurchmesser,
15 cm Höhe, 3»175 höh Wandstärke, die sich zum Erschmelzen von x
Silizium und zum Züchten von Siliziumkristallen eignen.
Eine in der Figur 5 gezeigte Vorrichtung zur Durchführung des Verfahrens besteht aus den Baueinheiten A,. B, G und D, nämlich
der Einheit A zur Verdampfung von Dotiermaterial, falls eine Dotierung beabsichtigt ist, B eine Gaszuführung, in der Dotiermitteldampfe
und SiCl^, gemischt werden, 0 ein Gas-Sauer-

stoffgebläse für die Hydrolyse der entstandenen Haliddämpfe
lind D eine Einheit für die Erzeugung der russbildenden SiCl2,
Dämpfe, z. B. durch Hindurchperlen von Sauerstoff durch flüssiges SiGl^ oder zur etwas schwierigeren Herstellung von
Dämpfen aus festen Halidverbindungen wie ZrOl^, TaOIc5 AlGl,
usw.
Der Dampfgenerator A besteht aus einem Eohrofen 30 iiad der
Generatorkammer 31·' Der Rohrofen enthält einen feuerfesten Kern 33? um den ein elektrisches Heizelement 34- gewickelt ist.
Er ist von dem Isolator 35 umgeben und in einem Gehäuse aus
rostfreiem Stahl eingeschlossen. An den Enden befinden sich die Durchgangsplatten 36. Die ganz aus rostfreiem Stahl gefertigte
Generatorkammer 31 wird in dem Ofen angeordnet und an ein Einlassrohr für das Trägergas angeschlossen. Das Rohr
besteht aus mehreren Windungen, die das Gas erhitzen und gleichzeitig als Träger für die Kammer dienen. Sie ruhen auf dem
feuerfesten Ziegel 38. Die pulverförmige Halidverbindung, wie
z. B. Zirkontetrachlorid, wird auf eine Reihe von Gittern 39
aus rostfreiem Stahl mit einer Maschenweite von z. B. 100 mesh gebracht, so dass alle Siebe bedeckt sind, mit Ausnahme des
obersten, das frei bleibt und als Filter Feststoffe vom Abgabeende fernhält* Vorzugsweise wird unter dem untersten Gitter
eine 30 /a poröse Nickelplatte A-O vorgesehen, die das einströmende
Trägergas gleichmässig verteilt und einen möglichst

grossen Kontakt zwischen Gas und Pulver gewährleistet. Die
Gitter reichen über den gesamten Kammerqueschnitt, so dass
das Trägergas durch sie hindurch- aber nicht um sie herum strömen kann. Zur Beschickung wird der Kammerdeckel abgenommen
und ein beladenes Gitter nach dem anderen eingesetzt, zwischen die Gitter Abstandshalter eingesetzt und der Deckel dicht verschlossen.
Silikon-O-Ringe halten den Deckel und die Endkappe
gasdicht. Die entstehenden Dämpfe werden über die Abgabeleitung 41, 44 und das Ventil 42 der Gas-Sauerstofflamme 45 zugeleitet,
in der sie zu Oxiden hydrolisiert werden, z. B. nach der Gleichung
+ 2H2O Ä. .SiO2 + HOl t
+ 2H2O ^ ZrO2 + HOl t ,
usw.
Alle Leitungen werden mit einem Isolator und einem Heizdraht
umwickelt, um Dampfkondensation und Verstopfen-der Leitungen
zu'■ verhindern. Die Temperatur kann mit den Thermoelementen
und 48 überwacht werden. ' .
In einem Ausführungsbeispiel wird flüssiges Siliziumtetrachlorid
in einem Behälter auf 35° erhitzt und mit Sauerstoff durchperlt. Die entstehenden Dämpfe fliessen durch die auf
45 - 50° erhitzte Leitung zum Ventil 4J. Zur Erhöhung des
Brechungsindex des Kerns eines optischen Wellenleiters wird mit Zirkon dotiert und hierzu pulverförmiges Zirkontetra-

Chlorid in einem Trockenbehälter in die Kammer gesetzt und diese verschlossen (Fig. 5)· Beim anschliessenden Erhitzen
werden die Ventile 42 und 43 geschlossen gehalten. Sobald die ,jeweilige Temperatur der Kammer 250 , der Leitung 300
und des Brenners 275° erreicht hat, wird der Brenner angezündet und das Ventil 42 geöffnet. In die Kammer wird "bei 49 ein
trockenes Trägergas, z. B. trockener Sauerstoff eingelassen, z. B. mit einem Durchsatz "von 2900 ccm/Min., nachdem es dtirch
die Windungen 37 vorerhitzt wurde. Beim Durchlauf durch die Gitter nimmt es Zirkontetrachloriddampfe auf und trägt diese
über die Leitung 41 und die Abzweigung 44 zum Brenner. Eine weitere Dampfkomponente kann über die Leitimg 50 und das Ventil
43 bei 44 zugemischt werden, z.B. trockener Sauerstoff
und Siliziumtetrachlorid mit einem Durchsatz von I7OO ccm/Min.
Die durch Hydrolyse erzeugte Russmischung enthält dann annähernd 4 Gew.% Zirkonoxid und 96% SiO^. Die feinteilige Russmischung
kann durch Erhitzen (z. B. im Induktionsofen der Fig.
2) zu dotiertem Kieselsäureglas konsolidiert werden.
Wird das Ventil 42 geschlossen und nur SiOl^, zum Brenner geleitet,
-so besteht das Glas aus reiner Kieselsäure. Diese kann aber auch mit anderen Chloriden, z. B. flüssigem TiCl^ mit
TiO^ oder mit SnCl^, GeCl^ oder PCI,, usw. dotiert werden.

Durch die langsame Einführung der Vorform in den sehr .heissen
Ofen erfolgt die Sinterung nacheinander, so dass die Gase durch die noch nicht gesinterten Teile entweichen können» Die
!Fertigform ist daher frei von Gasen und anderen Einschlüssen. Die träge Atmosphäre verhindert die Blasenbildung und erlaubt
die Auflösung etwaiger Gasblasen in der Kieselsäure, wo sie unschädlich sind. Die höher als übliche Sinterungstemperatur
begünstigt eine vollständigere Sinterung und lässt weniger ungesinterte Partikel zurück. Der geringe Abstand von Dorn und
Brenner und das Dornmaterial begünstigt eine dichte Bußschicht, die nicht abblättert oder reisst und weniger stark schrumpft.
Grössere Formlinge sind daher herstellbar.
Als ein Anwendungsbeispiel konnten z. B. 1 km lange Xiellenleiter
mit einer Dämpfung von weniger als 20 db/km für die meisten brauchbaren Wellenlängen erzeugt werden.

Claims (8)
1. Verfahren zum Herstellen von wasser- und blasenfreiem,
durchsichtigem Kieselsäureglas optischer Qualität, in. dem siliziumhaltiger Russ auf einem Dorn niedergeschlagen wird,
dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass eine Siliziumverhindung durch Flammhydrolyse als Euss auf einem nichtmetallischen Dorn zur
Bildung einer Rohform niedergeschlagen wird, wobei der Brenner für die Flammhydrolyse so dicht am Dorn angeordnet wird,
dass sich der Dorn im äusseren Flammkegel befindet und der Dorn rotiert und vor- oder rückwärts verschoben wird, und
nach Niederschlagung einer dichten gleichmässigen Eußseliicht
die Rußschicht mit solcher Geschwindigkeit in einen Sinterofen eingeführt wird, dass eingeschlossene Gase durch nicht
in der heissen Ofenzone befindliche Teile der Rußschicht entweichen,
während die Eußschicht schrumpft und sintert.
2. Verfahren gemäss Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass
die Rußschicht in träger Atmosphäre, trägen Gasen, Stickstoff und dergleichen gesintert wird.
3. Verfahren gemäss Anspruch 2, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die Sinteratmosphäre trocken ist.
4. Verfahren gemäss Anspruch 1, 2 oder 3, dadurch gekennzeichnet,
dass der Dorn unmittelbar nach vollendeter Sinterung der Rußschicht rasch aus dem Ofen entfernt wird.

5. Verfahren gemäss Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass
die Einführungsgeschwindigkeit der Rußschicht 0,2^4- - 2,54-~cm/
Min. (0,1-1 Inch) beträgt.
6. "Verfahren gemäss Ansprüchen 1-5» dadurch gekennzeichnet,
dass dem Russ eines oder mehrere der Dotiermittel Zirkon,. Zinn, Germanium, Phosphor, Tantal, Titan, Aluminium, Wolfram, Molybdän,
Beryllium oder Niobium.zugesetzt werden.
7. Verfahren gemäss Anspruch 6, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass das Dotiermittel als trockenes Chloridgas dem zur Flammhydrolyse
verwendeten Gas vor der Umsetzung zugesetzt wird.
8. Vorrichtung zur Durchführung des Verfahrens gemäss irgend einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass
ein und derselbe Dorn für die Niederschlagung der Rußschicht und als Träger für die Rußschicht beim Sintern dient.
9· Vorrichtung gemäss Jhispruch 8, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass ■
der Dorn aus Graphit, vorzugsweise mit höchstens 0,01% Aschegehalt, aus einer dichten, feuerfesten, kristallinen Keramik
niedriger Wärmedehnung, oder aus erschmolzenem Quarz besteht.
